Department of Computer Science, Faculty of Science at University of Copenhagen is offering a PhD scholarship in virtual reality commencing 18 May 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter.
Description of the scientific environment
The Human-centered Section in Computing at the University of Copenhagen offers a research environment with much freedom; to a large extent, you shape the research you work on and the ideas you pursue. Our section aspires to be a top research environment for human-computer interaction that bridges technology, theory, and empirical studies.
Project description
Virtual reality (VR) relies on the illusion that people believe virtual bodies to be their own, so-called body ownership. Yet, current measures of body ownership use simple statistical methods, and are based on subjective protocols developed for non-VR use. We seek a PhD student to work on quantifying body ownership in virtual reality.

The position is available for a 3-year period and your key tasks as a PhD student at SCIENCE are:
Formal requirements
Applicants should hold an MSc degree in Computer Science, Human-computer Interaction, Psychology, Cognitive Science, or related field with outstanding results. Other relevant criteria are:
Terms of employment
The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff.
Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.
The starting salary is currently at a minimum DKK 328,355 (approx. €43,750) including annual supplement (+ pension up to DKK 53,360). Negotiation for salary supplement is possible.

The main criterion for selection will be the research potential of the applicant and the above mentioned skills. The successful candidate will then be requested to formally apply for enrolment as a PhD student at the PhD school of Science. Job description

- To manage and carry through your research project
- Attend PhD courses
- Write scientific articles and your PhD thesis
- Teach and disseminate your research
- To stay at an external research institution for a few months, preferably abroad
- Work for the department
Formal requirements
Applicants should hold an MSc degree in Computer Science, Human-computer Interaction, Psychology, Cognitive Science, or related field with outstanding results. Other relevant criteria are:
- Skills in developing or evaluating virtual reality
- Strong programming skills, specifically in Unity.
- Proficiency in English, both in speaking and writing.
- Publications in recognized, peer-reviewed venues (e.g., UIST, CHI, IEEE VR)
