Department of Biology
Faculty of Science
University of Copenhagen

A postdoctoral position is available from Nov 1st, 2020, or as soon as possible thereafter, for a two year period in the PRISM centre, Department of Biology, Faculty of Science, University of Copenhagen, Denmark. The research within PRISM bridges protein biophysics and genomics using computational and experimental methods. The position in this call is focused on the laboratory experimental aspects of PRISM, and research areas include multiplexed-assays of variant effects (deep mutational scanning), protein-protein interactions, molecular cell biology, and studies of protein degradation.

About the centre and research environment
The position is part of the newly established Centre called PRISM: Protein Interactions and Stability in Medicine and Genomics, funded via a six-year Novo Nordisk Foundation Challenge grant. The overarching hypothesis behind PRISM is that by combining the latest developments in structural biology, protein folding, high-throughput experiments, computational biophysics and genomics we may transform our current view of how genomic variation perturbs the stability, folding and function of proteins. In turn, we can use such information to understand, diagnose and ultimately treat human diseases. PRISM is a collaboration between three research groups at the Department of Biology, Copenhagen (led by Kresten Lindorff-Larsen, Amelie Stein, Rasmus Hartmann-Petersen), and Michele Vendruscolo (University of Cambridge, UK), Douglas M. Fowler (University of Washington, US) and Torben Hansen (Novo Nordisk Foundation centre for Basic Metabolic Research, DK).

The postdoctoral fellow will work in the group of Rasmus Hartmann-Petersen, located in the Department of Biology in central Copenhagen. The research group is a member of the highly interdisciplinary and collaborative research environment at the Linderstrøm-Lang Centre for Protein Science. The postdoctoral fellow will work together with scientists from a number of disciplines, and also have the possibility of spending time in one or more of the partner laboratories within PRISM. The groups are highly international and a good level of spoken and written English is essential.

Details of the positions and research topics
The postdoctoral position (2 years with the possibility of extension) will work on one or more of the subprojects within PRISM. Long-term goals include developing predictive and mechanistic models for how genomic variation in protein-coding regions (protein variants) affect the stability, interactions and function of proteins. For an introduction to the research see e.g. our recent review (Stein et al, TiBS, 2019, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.tibs.2019.01.003). Research topics for the positions include:

  • Establishing and performing deep mutational scanning experiments
  • Studies of disease variants in cellular context
  • Finding new components and pathways in cellular protein quality control
  • Determining changes in interaction patterns as consequence of genetic variation

As PRISM develops we expect the candidate to also develop their own research ideas within the context of the project.

Qualifications
We are seeking motivated and strong applicants with a PhD degree in molecular biology, biochemistry, molecular biomedicine or similar fields with documented prior research experience within one or more of these areas:

  • Deep mutational scanning experiments
  • Molecular biology with mammalian cells
  • Library-based screens and/or high-throughput technologies with mammalian
  • Protein quality control and the ubiquitin-proteasome system

It will also be advantageous to have experience with one or more of the following:

  • Analysis of data from high-throughput experiments

For further information about the positions, please contact Professor Rasmus Hartmann-Petersen ([email protected]). Further information about the Department may be found at https://www1.bio.ku.dk/english/

The position is open from Nov 1st 2020or as soon as possible thereafter.

The University wishes our staff to reflect the diversity of society and thus welcomes applications from all qualified candidates regardless of personal background.

Terms of employment

The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff.

Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.

The starting salary is currently up to DKK 434.179 including annual supplement (+ pension up to DKK 74.244). Negotiation for salary supplement is possible.

The application, in English, must be submitted electronically by clicking APPLY NOW below.

Please include

  • A cover letter (max 1. page) explaining your background, key skills and how they are relevant to the research in PRISM, and your motivation for applying
  • Curriculum vitae (max 2. pages) including educational background previous research experience
  • List of publications (including preprints and papers in review)
  • PhD diploma including any written evaluation if applicable. If you are expecting to defend your PhD before September 1st and would like to apply, please submit a letter from your supervisor regarding your expected defence date
  • Contact details for two former employers or supervisors (no reference letters should be attached)

The deadline for applications is May 1st 2020 23:59 GMT +2.

After the expiry of the deadline for applications, the authorized recruitment manager selects applicants for assessment on the advice of the Interview Committee.

You can read about the recruitment process at http://employment.ku.dk/faculty/recruitment-process/.

Interviews will be held during summer (weeks 31 and 32).
