The National Research Centre for the Working Environment offers a 3-year position as researcher in the area of Chemical Working Environment.

The Danish National Research Centre for the Working Environment (NFA) is a national laboratory under the Danish Ministry of Employment. Our general mission is to conduct strategic applied research on present and emerging topics of relevance for the Danish working environment. As part of our mission, we contribute to academic education and further training as well as implementation of our research results. We publish our research results in reputable journals and convey research-based knowledge to workplaces, authorities, the two sides of industry as well as health and safety consultants. Renewed focus on Chemical Working Environment
In our unit, we are approximately 40 employees. We research into a wide range of occupational exposures including ‘classic chemicals’, SVOCs, particles and fibers as well as microbiology. Within the unit, the ‘chemistry, exposure, and risk assessment group’ currently consist of one professor, two senior researchers, three post.docs/researchers, four technicians, two research assistants and a variable number of students. Our research focuses on material-, release-, and exposure-characterization; workplace measurements; biomonitoring; risk assessments and fundamental research to understand mechanisms at play, etc.
A large part of your work will include development of new analytical methods for various research projects. From 2020, the Danish Government has renewed their focus on chemical working environment and we need a new colleague to strengthen the area. The upcoming tasks include:
The main analytical techniques in our laboratories includes: GC-MS-MS, LC-MS-MS, LC-qTOF, MALDI, TGA-MS, WDXRF and soon XRD and SEM. In addition, we have small to medium-scale facilities for testing and studying the release of chemicals and particles from products, materials, and process.
Typical matrices for organic chemical analysis are various sorbent materials, filter samples, wipes and personal passive air samplers (silicone) as well as various industrial materials and products. However, human biomonitoring is also an increasing activity and currently include analyses of urine and saliva.

It will be an advantage if you have experience with non-target/suspect screening in order to progress the group further in this direction. Furthermore, proficient Danish skills (oral and written) is an advantage. If you are not proficient in Danish, you are expected to become proficient in Danish within the duration of your employment.

Salary and employment terms

You will be employed as Researcher according to the collective agreement for academic staff between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC), and according to the position structure for scientific staff employed at government research institutions.

- Method development primarily on LC-QTOF and GC-MS-MS for workplace exposure measurement in e.g. plastics industry and the construction sector
- Development and validation of guidance and test methods for organics associated with industrial nano- and micromaterials for the OECD
- Planning and conduction of workplace measurement including sampling strategy
- Joint responsibility for setting up potentially new HRMS-systems in the lab
- Serve the political system upon requests (in Danish)
- Publication of obtained results in international scientific journals.

- Hold a PhD in the area of organic, analytical or environmental chemistry or similar
- Have substantial experience with method development and sample analyses on GC and/or LC-MS systems
- Have experience with operating various MS-instruments
- Have experience with organising and conducting field work
- Have a positive attitude towards challenges in the lab
- Thrive in multidisciplinary collaboration and are open-minded and positive.
