Department of Biology
Faculty of Science
University of Copenhagen

We are looking for a highly motivated and dynamic postdoc in the area of discovery and studies of novel peptide-based antibiotics for a 1 year position (with the possibility of extension) to commence on 1st June 2021. The Postdoc fellowship is funded by the Lundbeck Experiment Grant, “A Novel in vivo Peptide Display Technology in Bacteria” and will be affiliated with the Department of Biology at the Faculty of Science.

Project description:
Antimicrobial resistance caused by multi-drug resistant (MDR) bacteria is on the rise and has become a global human threat and economic burden worldwide. In particular, infections caused by Gram-negative bacteria are difficult to treat due to limited treatment options. Peptides are representing an expanding class of novel small molecule drugs and antimicrobial peptides are recapturing attention as alternatives to antibiotics. Despite the great interest of bioactive peptides for medical applications current technologies for their identification are limited.

In this project, we will establish and optimize a novel in vivo technology for the intracellular display of linear peptides. Based on this newly developed in vivo peptide technology, we seek to identify novel antimicrobial peptides as well as their intracellular molecular targets along with peptides capable of permeabilizing the bacterial envelope. The latter are expected to increase the bacterial susceptibility to antimicrobials by improving the cell entry.

The postdoc position is for 1 year with the possibility of extension and will be carried out in collaboration with the laboratory of Prof. Anders Løbner-Olesen at the Department of Biology, University of Copenhagen (https://www1.bio.ku.dk/english/research/fg/alo/).

The postdoc´s duties will include research within the above-mentioned field as well as teaching. The post may also include performing of other duties.

Qualifications:
We are looking for a highly motivated, independent and ambitious researcher able to work as a team player as well as independently, with an open communication style and a problem-solving attitude.

Applicants should have the following qualifications:

  • PhD in Molecular Microbiology, Microbial Genetics, Biotechnology, or equivalent.
  • Strong molecular microbiology and bacterial genetics background with Escherichia coli and ideally also with other Gram-negative bacteria.
  • Experience in fluorescence techniques in bacterial cell biology
  • Hands-on experience in antimicrobial susceptibility testing
  • Basic bioinformatic skills
  • Previous experience with next-generation sequencing workflows will be considered an advantage.
  • Proficiency in English; excellent communication skills (written and spoken) is mandatory.
