We are looking for a highly qualified research assistant for a 2.5-year full time position on the project: “The design of bacterial collaboromes for biocontrol of potato pathogens”. The qualified applicant will be working in close collaboration with the postdoctoral fellow in lead, and will be involved in both research- and wet-lab related assignments.
The position is available from June 1st 2021, or as soon as possible here after, at the Department of Biology at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark.

The project aims to design consortia of bacteria, termed collaboromes, able to prevent or diminish attacks by pathogens causing major annual losses of potato crops. The project will establish a comprehensive catalog of genes, species, and collaboromes characterizing the potato microbiota in fields with high or low incidence of diseases due to fungal or bacterial pathogens, focusing on the microbiota in soil, root and tuber. The focus on collaboromes is dictated by the proven ability of collaboromes to stably colonize and function in the presence of an existing competing microbiota, compared to single bacterial species inoculum. We will isolate, cultivate, and characterize promising soil bacteria to provide a collection of novel bacterial species able to antagonize specific plant pathogenes.

We are looking for a Research assistant to assist the isolation and screening of bacterial isolates and design of protective collaboromes. The qualified candidate will primarily have hands-on experience using a combination of classical microbial isolation techniques and high throughput screening assays. The position is for 2.5 years and will be carried out at Section of Microbiology, Department of Biology, University of Copenhagen. The Research assistant will engage in an international teamwork in a new interdisciplinary project funded by the Bio-Innovation Institute.

Qualifications:
We are looking for a highly motivated and ambitious Research assistant who is interested in microbiome interactions and keen on working with high throughput screening. Applicants with the following proficiencies will be regarded highly qualified and will be prioritized:

● MSc in microbiology, microbial biotechnology or equivalent with research experience and a background in Microbiology.
● Documented experience working with cultivation and characterization of bacteria from rhizosphere, soil or similar complex environments.
● Knowledge on and research experience with the plant root microbiome is highly desired.
● Hands on experience with high through put functional screening of bacterial isolates.
● Motivated to work in a multidisciplinary research team, as well as independently, with an open communication style and a problem-solving attitude.
● Fluency in written and spoken English.

Main tasks of the appointed applicant
• Assist in the design of novel protocols for isolating co-dependent bacteria.
• Preparation of samples for high-throughput sequencing and assist the postdoc in the development of high-throughput methodology for identifying synergistic and antagonistic bacterial interactions in complex microbiomes.
• Design consortia of bacteria, termed collaboromes, able to prevent or diminish growth of selected fungal plant pathogens in close collaboration with the postdoctoral fellow in lead.

Application
The application must contain:
● Motivated letter of application
● Curriculum vitae
● List of publications if applicable
● Diploma and transcripts of records (BSc and MSc)
