Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science at University of Copenhagen (UC) is offering a PhD scholarship in medicinal chemistry commencing 1.8.2021 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Description of the scientific environment

The phd project will be carried out in collaboration between the research groups of Prof Mikael Bols and Prof Claus Juul Løland at University of Copenhagen, Denmark and the group of Amy Newman at National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA), USA. The fellow is expected to work 6 month in the Newman group at NIDA and the remainder of the project in the two groups in Copenhagen.

Project description
The selected candidate will work in the intersection between chemistry and biophysical pharmacology. The target of the Phd project is to elucidate the protonation state of cocaine and phenyltropane analogues when bound to the dopamine transporter. The project involves synthesizing and characterizing fluorescence indicator probe molecules based on a cocaine scaffold, express and purify the dopamine transporter and study the interaction between compound and protein using fluorescence spectroscopy and microscopy.

Job description

The position is available for a 3-year period and your key tasks as a PhD student at SCIENCE are:

  • To manage and carry through your research project

  • Attend PhD courses
  • Write scientific articles and your PhD thesis
  • Teach and disseminate your research
  • To stay at an external research institution for a few months, preferably abroad
  • Work for the department

Formal requirements
Applicants should hold an MSc degree in Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, Pharmacy or similar with good results and good English skills. In order to carry out the different tasks in the project skills in organic synthesis and biochemistry/molecular biology are required so the candidate should possess at least one in advance and be prepared to learn the other. As criteria for the assessment of your qualifications emphasis will also be laid on previous publications (if any) and relevant work experience.

Terms of employment

The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff.

Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.

The starting salary is currently at a minimum DKK 333,464 (approx. €44,461) including annual supplement (+ pension at a minimum DKK 54,191). Negotiation for salary supplement is possible.
