Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research
University of Copenhagen
We are seeking a skilled PhD fellow to commence November 1, 2021, or after agreement.
Background
The Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research’s vision is to strengthen interdisciplinary research that transforms our basic understanding of the mechanisms that underlie metabolic health and disease, and to accelerate this knowledge toward new prevention and treatment strategies. We were established in 2010 and in 2017, we moved into new laboratories, offices and meeting rooms in the Maersk Tower www.maersktower.ku.dk.
The Center has around 260 employees who work in an international, highly collaborative research environment across a range of biomedical disciplines. You can read more about us here: www.cbmr.ku.dk.
Our group and research
The successful applicant will work in the of Group Prof. Romain Barrès, which investigates how environmental and lifestyle factors influence long-term metabolic health in the present and future generations through epigenetic signals. We are an international lab group with a focus on hypothesis-driven research and a particular drive to make discoveries of high societal implication. You can read more about the work of the Barrès group here .
Project description
Enhancers are DNA regions that regulate the transcription of genes. Preliminary data indicate that certain enhancers are epigenetically remodeled in skeletal muscle tissue after long -term endurance training in men. These enhancer regions overlap with disease-associated genetic variants identified by Genome Wide Association Studies (GWAS). To further understand how physical exercise can regulate human health, we wish to perform functional testing and validation of genes targeted by these exercise-altered enhancers both in vitro in cultured metabolic cells and in vivo in rodent animal models. This project involves close collaboration with staff at CBMR and international collaboration with Prof. Stephen Simpson at the University of Sydney, and Prof. Marcelo Nobrega at the University of Chicago.
