Department of Pharmacy

Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences (SUND)

University of Copenhagen

The Department of Pharmacy is offering a one-year postdoctoral fellowship to investigate the interaction of photocatalytic nanoparticles with lipid membranes and lipopolysaccharides. The project will be carried out within the LEO Foundation Center for Cutaneous Drug Delivery, which integrates several disciplines, including physical chemistry, pharmaceutics, and molecular biology, to perform state-of-the-art research and to create innovative solutions within cutaneous drug delivery of both small and large molecules. The successful applicant will have the opportunity for cross-disciplinary research in collaboration with other researchers in the Center, as well as with external collaborators. The fellowship is available from October 1, 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Project description

With increasing bacterial resistance against conventional antibiotics, nanoparticles are attracting interest as antimicrobials, offering advantages related to presently undeveloped bacterial resistance, as well as possibilities for triggerable antimicrobial effects for combatting challenging infections. Several mechanisms have been proposed for the antimicrobial activity of nanomaterials, including direct membrane destabilization, generation of reactive oxygen species, and heating induced either by light or magnetic fields. Despite considerable work demonstrating potent antimicrobial effects against various pathogens of such nanoparticles, studies on the mechanisms underlying such effects remain scarce. In the present project, focus is placed on investigating interactions of photocatalytic nanoparticles with bacterial membrane lipids and lipopolysaccharides, employing surface chemical methodologies. Through this, the project aims to provide a mechanistic foundation for further development of potent and selective nanoparticle-based therapeutics.

The successful candidate will be a member of the LEO Foundation Center for Cutaneous Drug Delivery. This project, which is funded by the Independent Research Fund Denmark, is directed at: (i) studies of the interaction of photocatalytic TiO2 nanoparticles with bacterial lipopolysaccharides and bacteria-mimicking lipid membranes, as well as (ii) how potency of such nanoparticles can be boosted by loading with antimicrobial peptides (AMP).

Your job

Your key tasks as a postdoc at the Faculty are to:

  • Develop, optimise and evaluate surface chemistry methods (ATR-IR, QCM-d, neutron reflectometry) to study the interaction of TiO2 nanoparticles with bacterial lipopolysaccharides and lipid membranes.
  • Write scientific manuscripts on the grounds of your research results
  • Participate in Center activities
  • Participate in national and international conferences and scientific meetings
  • Participate in teaching activities at the department
  • Co-supervise PhD and MSc students

Profile

We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic scientist with the following competencies and experience:

Essential experience and skills:

  • You have obtained a relevant PhD degree prior to the starting date
  • You are experienced in surface chemistry methodologies
  • You are experienced in surface chemistry studies of lipid membranes
  • Proficient communication skills and ability to work in teams
  • Excellent English skills, written and spoken

Preferred qualifications

The ideal candidate for this project has hands-on experience with research with biological surface chemistry, particularly in investigations of lipid membranes, employing state-of-the-art surface chemistry methodologies for such studies, such as QCM-d, ATR-IR, ellipsometry, and neutron reflectometry. Furthermore, experience with antimicrobial peptides is an advantage.

Place of employment

The place of employment is at the department of Pharmacy, University of Copenhagen. We offer creative and stimulating working conditions in dynamic and international research environment.

Terms of employment

The employment as postdoc is a full time position for one year. Starting date is October 1, 2021, or as soon as possible thereafter

Salary, pension and terms of employment will be in accordance with the agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations). Currently, the monthly salary starts at 34,600 DKK/ approx. 4,650 Euro (April 2020-level). (Check) Depending on qualifications, a supplement may be negotiated. The employer will pay an additional 17.1 % to your pension fund.

Non-Danish and Danish applicants may be eligible for tax reductions, if they hold a PhD degree and have not lived in Denmark the last 10 years.
