The Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) opens a permanent full time position for an experienced scientist to work with monitoring of sea ice from passive microwave satellites to support our remote sensing activities.
DMI is a leading European developer and producer of remote sensing products, including sea ice concentration and emissivity products for the Polar Oceans based upon microwave observations. The satellite based sea ice monitoring is critical for understanding the effects of climate change on the Arctic and Antarctica sea ice cover and are important inputs to weather and ocean models.
Your main work will be to work with the development of retrievals of global sea ice concentration and sea ice emissivity from passive microwave observations at DMI. In addition, you will participate in the work with the retrieval of sea surface and sea ice surface temperature observed from infrared satellites and snow ice interface temperatures from microwave data. You will participate in the development of new satellite missions in collaboration with the European Space Agency (ESA) and EUMETSAT. Field work to Greenland to collect reference data for the validation of the satellite products is also a possibility.
Most of the work is carried out in the EUMETSAT project: Ocean and Sea Ice Satellite Application Facility (OSI SAF), but you will also work on other projects funded by ESA, the European commission and the Danish National Center for Climate Research. You will work in close collaboration with dedicated and highly qualified scientists colleagues in the remote sensing group and colleagues from other institutions across Europe.
You will participate in leading the improvements of the global sea ice concentration algorithms, developing climate time series, writing peer reviewed publications and representing DMI in new research projects and in international organizations.
Main working tasks:
Qualifications:
The Research Department at the DMI employs a staff of approx. 65 scientists, of which 17 are located in the remote sensing group. We have a strong international profile, which is also reflected in the many nationalities here and in an English "working language".
Employment: Employment and salary will be according to the Danish Law and Agreements. It will be possible to apply for an addition to the basic salary and to be hired as special consultant, if qualifications justify this.
The DMI wants to contribute to equal opportunities for women and men, and encourage all qualified persons to apply regardless of age, gender or ethnic background.
For further details about the position, contact the head of the remote sensing group: Jacob L. Høyer (telephone: +45 39 15 72 03 or by e-mail: [email protected]).
DMI offers a flexible working week of 37 hours including a paid lunch break, and six weeks of paid vacation annually. If you come from abroad, there is a possibility for a reduced tax scheme the first 7 years (see https://skat.dk/skat.aspx?oid=2244911).
Application: The application must contain a motivated cover letter and a curriculum vitae. The application should be received beforeWednesday 24th November, 2021 at hrs. 12:00 CET.
