København Ø
At the department of Organ Surgery and Transplantation, Copenhagen University Hospital, Rigshospitalet and the Department of Computer Science, University of Copenhagen, a PhD fellowship position will be available the 1st of April 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter.
For students currently enrolled in a masters program, the possibility of delaying start time to the summer of 2023 will also be an option.
The focus of the PhD fellowship will be on modelling electronic health record (EHR) data towards producing models capable of outcome prediction for surgical patients. These specifically include predictions of who will develop complications after a surgical procedure, based on analyses of the available EHR data. Methods will be based on further developing current state-of-the-art Natural Language Processing methodologies like self-supervised learning and attention-based networks for their usage on raw medical record data.
As these data are combined from structured (eg. laboratory values and vital signs) and unstructured data (eg. medical free chart text) data, you will be expected to investigate and develop new modelling approaches capable of assessing a real-time EHR data feed, combining data points with varied complexity and presenting with varied frequencies.
To this end, you will work on data housed in the Integrated Health Data Cohort, a unique EHR dataset comprising data from more than 1.5 million Danish patients spanning over 5 years. This cohort presents one of the largest and most complete EHR datasets used for AI modelling purposes worldwide, thus ensuring a state-of-the art framework to support novel data scientific research advances.
Who you are
We are looking for a candidate in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Physics or Bioinformatics, with a strong interest in deep learning and a desire to develop a skillset in the healthtech field through a 3-year PhD fellowship position. As the position will be jointly split between the Departments of Computer Science and the Copenhagen University Hospital, Rigshospitalet, you will be expected to interact with both data science and clinical research teams.
What we can offer
We can offer a PhD fellowship in a combined data science and clinical environment, ensuring both a state-of-the art data science framework, strong support and supervision as well as a project with established clinical relevance and potential benefit to patients.
Place of work
Geographically, you will work primarily from the department of Computer Science at the University of Copenhagen - the Pioneer Centre in AI placed in the Observatory in the Copenhagen Botanical Garden but will also be expected to work from the Copenhagen University Hospital, Rigshospitalet a number of days, when studies require interaction with the clinical research team. Both locations are situated in close proximity within walking distance of each other, in the central Copenhagen area.
Salary
Salary and employment contract will follow the standard PhD research fellow agreement between Danish Regions and academic organizations (AC agreement).
