Do you have in-depth knowledge of jihadism research? And do you want to be part of a research team focusing on transnational jihadism and containment? Then you might be our new post doc at the Danish Institute for International Studies (DIIS).

About DIIS and the position
At DIIS, we have a long-standing tradition of contributing to the development of academic research in international studies, and one of our absolute hallmarks is providing research-based input to policymakers and public debate. You will become part of an inspiring, vivid knowledge environment at an institution which aims to be at the forefront of multidisciplinary research, policy analysis and dissemination on global affairs. It is essential that you are ready to engage in cross-disciplinary cooperation and value input to and from colleagues with different approaches, as mixing different disciplinary backgrounds and theoretical approaches is a large part of DIIS’ DNA.

You will be part of the unit Global security and Worldviews. The unit focuses on trends in how different governments, private actors, and international organizations deal with new threats and conflict lines: Everything from how to build resilience, how to combat violent extremism, or how to create order and lasting peace in areas that have long been raged by conflict. Our research also contributes to an understanding of theological, religious, and ideological conflicts, and the particular narratives that sustain these conflicts: This may in part be about tensions between Russia on the one hand and the West on the other, the rise of the new right in Europe and in the United States or the mobilization to transnational jihadism, particularly the movements of al-Qaeda and the Islamic State.

The post-doc will contribute specifically to an ERC-funded project within the unit that focuses on armed groups with linkages to al-Qaeda and the Islamic State (https://www.diis.dk/en/projects/transnational-jihad-explaining-escalation-and-containment). It is expected that the research undertaken focus specifically on containment, de-escalation and derailment of dynamics driving transnational jihadism. Experience with large-N and/or medium-N studies is an advantage since the project looks at trends across different battle fields. The candidate is also expected to be well-versed in Peace and Conflict Research literature on civil resistance and different conflict resolution mechanisms including ceasefires, negotiations, autonomy, and de-mobilization. Finally, the candidate should have experience with regression-based analysis and have a proven track record both from the wider field of jihadism studies and empirical peace and conflict research.

We expect you to:

  • hold a master’s as well as a PhD degree within the social sciences, Peace and Conflict studies or similar.
  • have a strong list of peer-reviewed publications and experience with policy work.
  • have experience with publishing and communicating your research results to external target groups.
  • be a skilled communicator in both written and oral English.

Contract and renumeration
The position as postdoc researcher is an 18-month position, in which you may expect some travel activity and a research stay abroad. We would like you to start on 1 March 2023 or shortly thereafter.

Renumeration and other job conditions follow the general agreement between the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC) and the Danish Ministry of Finance as well as local collective agreements at DIIS. As such, the starting salary is 459,766 DKK excl. pensions. In addition, the local salary agreement has a possibility for a personal supplement amounting up to 60,000 DKK depending on the researcher’s relevant qualifications. A pension contribution of 17.1 % is added to the above-mentioned salary.

Candidates applying from abroad may under certain conditions be eligible for a special researcher tax scheme. The scheme offers a gross tax rate at 27 % plus labour market contributions, totalling 32.84 %, for a period of seven years. Read more about the tax scheme at https://skat.dk/skat.aspx?oid=2244911.
