PhD Position in Scientific Collaboration

The Department of Communication, Faculty of Humanities, University of Copenhagen (UCPH), Denmark, invites applications for a PhD position in the Marie Skłodowska-Curie network Train2Wind to be filled by 1 September 2020. The position is fully funded for 3 years.

Train2Wind is a PhD and researcher training network analyzing entrainment in offshore wind farms with computer models and experiments. But it is also a testbed for the study of how researchers collaborate in a network of young and senior researchers.

The aim of this PhD project is to study scientific collaboration and knowledge sharing in the Train2Wind network, which is a cutting-edge example of a long-term, distributed research collaboration. In such collaborations, access to shared data and services is an increasing challenge. The challenge arises, among other things, due to cross-disciplinary differences in terminology and traditions among researchers. Collaboration and data access is also shaped by the information-management systems applied to support collaboration and data access. With a network of 15 senior researchers, 12 PhDs, and 8 short-term fellows distributed across 4 European countries, Train2Wind will only be successful if collaboration is handled well.

The specific focus of this PhD project is togenerate new knowledge about technology-supported collaboration in a distributed research environment. This also includes analyzing and understanding the impact of collaborative technologies on information management and providing new insights into the influence of long-term system usability on user acceptance of collaborative technologies. You will also do secondments at the participating partners in Train2Wind.

Admission requirements

To be eligible for the position, applicants need to have:

• A two-year Master’s degree (120 ECTS) in Information Science, Computer Science, or a similar topic
• A strong interest in understanding scientific collaboration and its technology support
• Experience in collecting empirical data by means of for example interviews and observation

In addition, you must fulfil the EU eligibility criteria for Marie Skłodowska-Curie Early Stage Researchers. That is, you have:

• Less than 4 years of equivalent research experience (i.e. working as a researcher after obtaining your master’s degree)
• Not been awarded the title of PhD
• Not resided or carried out your main activity in Denmark for more than 12 months in the last 3 years.

Applicants must have submitted their thesis at the time of application, to the extent the thesis forms part of their Master program. In case you have not obtained your diploma by the application deadline, you must include a statement (pre-approval) from your university declaring that you have been awarded the master degree.

Applicants with a non-Danish Master's degree will have their degree assessed by the Ministry of Higher Education and Science in order to establish, if the Master's degree is equivalent to a Danish Master's degree. Excellent communication skills in English is considered essential and applicants must speak and write academic English fluently. The PhD Administration may ask applicants to document their proficiency in English at any time during the recruitment process if this is considered necessary.

Project description
The application must include a detailed project description containing the overall objectives, reflections on the intended PhD project's method and design as well as a timetable. This description should make reference to the project mentioned above.

The project proposal must not exceed 6 standard pages, corresponding to approx. 12,000 characters (including curriculum, title, punctuation, figures, footnotes and references, but excluding bibliography / bibliography). A substantial breach of this will result in the application being excluded from consideration.

Diploma and transcript of records

The following documentation must be submitted:

• A copy of the applicant's Master's degree diploma (if not available before the application deadline, a pre-approval must be submitted)

• A copy of the applicant's Bachelor’s degree diploma
• A copy of the applicant's Bachelor’s degree transcript of records (an official description of the grading scale must be included)

The recruitment process
After the expiry of the deadline for applications, applicants are selected for assessment on the advice of the Appointment Committee. All applicants will be notified whether they are passed on to assessment or not. Whereafter, the Assessment Committee is appointed by the Dean and the selected applicants are notified of the composition of the committee. Each applicant has the opportunity to comment on the part of the assessment which relates to their own application.

Enrolment
Enrolment as a PhD student at the Faculty of Humanities' PhD School is a precondition for employment as a PhD scholar.

As a PhD scholar at The Faculty of Humanities, University of Copenhagen, you will be supervised for approximately 180 hours distributed over 6 semesters. In addition to this, you must complete courses totaling approximately 30 ECTS. On completion of the PhD program you must submit a PhD thesis in order to document your research effort.

Terms of employment
PhD scholars at the Faculty of Humanities are appointed under the terms and conditions of the collective bargaining agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. According to the agreement, PhD scholars are obliged – without any additional remuneration – to perform tasks assigned to them corresponding to 840 working hours over the three years. These tasks will primarily be in the form of teaching, dissemination, research or other related academic areas.

As Early Stage Researcher (ESR) member of the Train2Wind network the PhD must also participate in international secondments (internships as visiting researcher) to other partners in the Train2Wind network, attend the Train2Wind training programme as well as other PhD courses, and actively participate in outreach activities aimed to promote your own scientific research as well as the Train2Wind network activities to a wider audience.

The PhD study must be completed in accordance with The Ministerial Order on the PhD programme (2013) and the University’s rules on achieving the degree. Salary, pension and terms of employment are in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State. Depending on seniority, the monthly salary begins around 27.590 DKK /approx. 3.695 EUR (April 2020-level). In addition to the salary paid directly, the University will also pay a monthly contribution to the pension fund.
