Open position as research assistant in ERC funded research project on the “Global Sites of International Criminal Justice” (JustSites StG 802053, ERC The Global Sites of International Criminal Justice (JustSites) – University of Copenhagen (ku.dk)). The JustSites is part of the Danish National Research Foundation's Centre of Excellence for International Courts (iCourts). iCourts has a lively research environment of around 30 researchers around half of which are at the PhD or postdoc level.

The JustSites research project studies what it calls the "justice sites" active in the fight against atrocity crimes (genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes). Such sites could include, but are not limited to, international criminal courts, national war crimes units, NGO offices, government branches, academic research centers, law firms, and media outlets. As researchers are working to finalize the project in 2024, we are especially interested in the relations between such sites and how they affect the fight against atrocity crimes.

Related to this ambition, JustSites is looking for a research assistant to assist the team in analyzing and visualizing data on the relations between justice sites. In particular, we are looking for a profile that has considerable experience working with social network analysis as well as solid expertise in using the software linked to such analysis and its different methods. We would also appreciate a candidate with strong visualization skills that can help showcase the relations between justice sites in an intuitive and analytically appealing way. More broadly, it is important that the candidate can use these skills critically and creatively and on different types of data. Prior knowledge of international law and criminal justice will be an advantage but is not a requirement for the position. The research assistant will work closely with the Principal Investigator (PI) in pursuing the goals of the project.

Salary and terms of employment
The position is full time and fully salaried based on the agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (Akademikernes Centralorganisation, AC). The position is available from 1 May 2024 and for a period of 6 months. The start date is negotiable.

Required qualifications
The position requires a Master’s degree. We are open to degrees in different subjects.

Application
The application must be written in English and include the following enclosures:

  • Application letter/cover letter (max 1 page)
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Documentation of qualifications (Master’s diploma, etc.).

Application procedure
Letter of motivation, appendices must be uploaded electronically using the link below. We advise you to have the above mentioned documents ready before you begin to fill out your online application, and it is essential that all required documents are enclosed.

Applicants will be kept informed about the process of the application procedure on a regular basis via email.

Following the application deadline, the Associate Dean of Research selects applicants for assessment on the advice of the Appointment Committee. Applicants are selected on the basis of an overall assessment of the applicants that best match the recruitment needs of the faculty as described in this advertisement for the post. All applicants are then immediately notified whether their application has been passed for assessment by an expert Assessment Committee. Selected applicants are notified of the composition of the committee and when the committee has completed its assessment, each applicant has the opportunity to comment on the part of the assessment that relates to the applicants themselves.

University of Copenhagen wishes to reflect the surrounding society and therefore encourages all interested parties regardless of personal background to apply for the position.

Additional information can be obtained from JustSites PI, Professor MSO Mikkel Jarle Christensen, mail: [email protected].

Information about the application procedure is available from HR, e-mail: [email protected]. Please refer to ID number 211-0278/24-2O.
