Bioinformatics scientist / Biological data scientist

Denmark, Capital, Copenhagen

  • Job facts

We are looking for an engaged and talented scientist with strong bioinformatics, data analysis and machine learning skills to join our Bioinformatics and RNA Biology team at the Roche Innovation Center Copenhagen (RICC) in a 2-year temporary position starting February 2021. RICC is located in Hørsholm, 20 km north of Copenhagen. At RICC, we are around 60 scientists and associates passionate about developing new nucleic acid-based medicines. As part of Roche pharma Research and Early Development (pRED), at RICC we cover the design, discovery, optimization, and small-scale synthesis of nucleic acid-based medicines.

The team

The Bioinformatics and RNA Biology team is part of the Discovery department at RICC. In the team we cover both wet- and dry-lab work, developing new experimental and computational approaches to oligonucleotide drug discovery. We explore mechanisms for target engagement and quantify how the chemical structure of therapeutic oligonucleotides relates to their measured properties. We develop cell-based assays and protocols based on massively parallel sequencing to measure these properties, and train predictive algorithms to capture the structure-property relationships. All members of our team actively participate in one or more of our drug discovery projects.

The job

Your role will be to participate in projects in various disease areas, representing the Bioinformatics and RNA biology team. It will be you who will design many of the oligonucleotides the project needs, using in-house developed design algorithms, and analyze much of the data generated in the project.

We are seeking a candidate who is able to analyze and identify features of our oligonucleotides that correlate with their measured properties, and can combine methods from biological sequence analysis, machine learning, and statistical data analysis, to support development of accurate prediction algorithms for design of nucleic acid-based medicines. More and more of our data is sequencing-based, and candidates with experience setting up workflows and analysis pipelines for novel types of RNA-Seq data will be preferred.

To be successful in this role, it is crucial that you can work with people across many different subject areas and cultures, and will enjoy finding creative and data-driven solutions to our business needs in close collaboration with colleagues.

We offer an exciting and challenging job in an international environment where you will be given the opportunity to help realize the potential of nucleic acid-based medicines for patients. Because we know that our employees are critical to our success, we are dedicated to remaining a great place to work and to providing employees with development programs, services and benefits that allow them to bring the best to the business and to their personal lives.

Your profile

You have a MSc or PhD in natural sciences relevant to bioinformatics and biological data analysis (e.g. bioinformatics, biophysics, biostatistics, biotechnology engineering or related fields).

In addition, you also:

  • Have a thorough understanding of molecular biology and biochemistry, and a good grasp of the experimental methods used in these research fields and the types of data generated

  • Have a thorough understanding of basic algorithms and data structures used in computer science, and is able to develop and apply machine learning algorithms for predictive modeling

  • Have a good understanding of the mathematical theory of probabilities and statistics, and experience working with statistical methods and exploratory data analysis techniques in an independent manner

  • Can articulate scientific questions and use mathematical techniques to arrive at an answer using available data

  • Can develop computational analysis pipelines for many different types of biological data, for example for RNA-seq data, and knows how to set up server environments to support this

  • Are fluent in a statistical programming language such a R, and a scripting language such as Python, and have proficiency in interactive data visualization using for example Shiny or Dash

  • Are comfortable working with a database querying language like SQL

  • Can effectively communicate and discuss data analysis results and insights to support project decisions

  • Enjoy working on both smaller ad hoc tasks to address project needs as well as on longer term research projects that iterate between wet- and dry-lab work

  • Have written and verbal fluency in English

Application procedure

Please submit your application via application link no later than January 3rd 2021. We will review the applications continuously and close the recruitment process once we have found the right candidate, so we encourage you to apply as soon as possible.

The application must include:

  • Application (motivated cover letter) addressing where you stand with respect to the qualifications mentioned

  • CV, including list of publications

Further information about the position may be obtained from Peter Hagedorn ([email protected]), Bioinformatics and RNA Biology team leader.
