We are looking for a highly skilled medicinal chemist to join our team at the Roche Innovation Center Copenhagen (RICC) in a 3-year temporary position starting in February/March 2021. This is an exciting opportunity to join the Synthesis and Optimisation Department position as a Scientist or Senior scientist within Oligonucleotide Medicinal Chemistry.
Background
At RICC, we are focused on the early Research and Development of new drug molecules based on chemically synthesized oligonucleotides. As part of Roche pharma Research and Early Development (pRED), at RICC we cover the design, discovery, optimization, and synthesis of nucleic acid-based medicines. The site is located in Hørsholm, 20 km north of Copenhagen.

The team
Synthesis and Optimization is in the RNA Molecule Research (RMR) chemistry department. We collaborate with the different departments in RMR, as well as across the global organization in Roche, in order to bring molecules from initial preclinical development to patients.
The department consists of Scientists and Associates collaborating to develop and optimize oligonucleotide-based chemistries. We have an explorative and open mindset to always optimize and push current chemistry technologies and processes as well as developing new innovative technologies to constantly be able to deliver the best oligonucleotide drug candidates possible.
We are the chemistry experts of RMR and, together with our partners, we generate scientific and technical knowledge to enable the discovery of novel molecules with diverse modes of action for unmet medical needs across a variety of disease therapeutic areas. As a core, we build our strength on a broad diversity of hardworking and highly skilled technical experts and chemists who are delivering and innovating in the space of RNA-based therapeutics.
The job
We seek an excellent chemist with a strong and broad scientific and technical profile to develop oligonucleotide based drug candidates.
You will find yourself in a dynamic matrix structure with changing tasks and will be working in close collaboration with project leaders, scientists and associates in an agile environment.
In this role, you will design, synthesize and purify modified oligonucleotides, optimize oligonucleotide chemistries and processes in the laboratory, as well as participate in project teams representing Synthesis and Optimization in order to enable the lead compound identification/optimization and shape the overall strategy of the drug discovery projects.
Your qualifications
The successful applicant is expected to have a PhD or equivalent relevant experience in synthetic organic chemistry, medicinal chemistry, chemical engineering, or a related discipline. It is very important that you thrive in the laboratory environment and that you are passionate about developing next generation drug molecules.
In addition, the ideal candidate has:
- In-depth knowledge of synthetic organic chemistry and medicinal chemistry is a requirement
- Ability to independently design new successful multi-step synthetic routes for new monomers and other small molecules
- Experience and success with independently generating new ideas and maturing them together with colleagues
- Experience with solid phase synthesis and/or nucleosides/nucleotides is an advantage
- Experience with purification techniques such as HPLC - reverse phase, ion exchange and/or size exclusion is an advantage
- Several years of experience from the pharmaceutical industry is an advantage
- Proven track record from previous work (i.e. examples in the peer reviewed or patent literature) is an advantage
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential; fluency in English is required
