Gravity field research in geodesy and geophysics include satellite, in-situ, marine and airborne gravity campaigns. The field has undergone important developments in the last decades, with gravity field being an important element in the global geodetic observing system and a fundamental part of reference networks. New satellite missions and ongoing developments in hardware and methodology give exciting new ways to map and use the gravity field, resulting in more accurate geoid models at local, regional and global level, understanding the earth structure, and providing key data for mass changes and associated climate-related research. DTU Space is at the forefront globally in many of these fields.
Responsibilities and qualifications
The candidate is expected to take a leading role in developing the strategic research within satellite gravity field research, developing methodologies for analysis and utilization of next generation gravity field missions, including future cold atom based technologies. The candidate will be part of the DTU Space gravity field research group, and will eventually be the leading scientist for the development of the group with a staff of 4-5 people and associated PhD students. It is expected that the candidate will be a main driver and contribute to a successful generational change and consequently have an ambition to qualify as a professor within the near future. The successful candidate is equally expected to take a leading role within these main tasks:
- Research in physical geodesy and related geophysics areas, including use of gravity field satellites for climate related research
- Developing the research supporting public sector consultancy in the field of gravity, geoid and reference frames, including geoid determination
- Develop, plan and execute field campaigns acquiring gravimetric data in support of national, polar and international surveys (absolute, relative, ground, marine and airborne)
- Attract external funding and building up the research group
More additional responsibilities and tasks are:
- Develop strategic research related to gravity fields addressing needs of the public sector and take lead in relevant national and international committees and working groups, in bodies like IAG (geodesy), NKG (Nordic geodesy) and ESA
- Be a driving force in dissemination of results of strategic research and perspectives to the public, sector and relevant committees
- Establish new and strengthen existing networking with the private sector and establish collaboration projects on innovation related to Gravity fields across DTU institutes
- Take part in the management of the Gravity Field section in GEO
- Take a lead role in in the development of geodetic education and teaching at the BSc, MSc and PhD levels within both the ESPE program (Earth and Space Physics and Engineering) and other relevant DTU educational programs. DTU can provide Danish language courses enabling the candidates to teach in Danish within 2-3 years.
The division of Geodesy and Earth Observation contributes actively to Arctic DTU, Security DTU, and DTU Space Drone Centre. Parts of the teaching is coordinated with DTU Environment.
You must also have:
- Demonstrated experience through advanced research in gravity field related matters
- Experience with research in space geodesy an advantage (gravity field missions / altimetry)
- Experience with governmental survey needs and activities
- Field work experience, gravity-field related and/or GNSS
As a formal qualification you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent) as well as academic qualifications equivalent to those obtained by holding a position as a researcher or postdoc. To be appointed as a senior researcher, you must have completed a didactic/pedagogic education.
