Two fully-funded positions as PhD (a PhD fellowship) in Surgical Oncology is offered at Center for Surgical Science in a period of 3 years starting from 01.01.2022-31.12.2024.
Are you interested in improving the surgical patient care pathway, being on the cutting edge of surgical technique, and wanting to do clinical trials that may change the treatment of colorectal cancer? Then you might be the doctor we are looking for at Center for Surgical Science at Zealand University Hospital (CSS), Køge. For surgeons that have concluded an introduction position in surgery or enrolled in a residency (at any time during residence but preferably after year 1), we can provide special job positions with supplementary clinical work depending on your level of clinical expertise.
CSS and research
CSS consists of a group of primarily medical doctors and medical students, molecular biologists, a pathologist, data scientists, bioinformaticians, data engineers, nurses, physiotherapists, and dieticians. We aim to improve the treatment of patients with surgical diseases, minimize morbidity and optimize clinical outcomes. Through a cross-disciplinary research approach, we utilize the full spectrum of the available health information to tailor multi-modal interventions and characterize key issues for patients undergoing surgery to individualize pre-, intra-, and postoperative treatment.

In CSS we are engaged in examining innovative interventions before, during, and after oncological surgery. We include both clinical and translational research methodologies. As such, CSS is heading international projects in the development of personalized medicine in the perioperative period, why you will be part of a team, where there are good possibilities to perform research at the highest international level. To facilitate efficient research, the current PhD students and senior researchers in the unit actively work together and CSS provides internal courses in statistics and study designs and has an administrative framework that streamlines applications and approvals.
Project/job description
We are looking for skilled doctors with an interest in surgery and conducting clinical trials for a minimum of two PhD positions in Surgical Oncology. The two positions aim to investigate the effects of preoperative optimization and local resections of early colonic cancers using novel approaches in a clinical trial setting.
Preoperative optimization
This study series will investigate the effect of preoperative interventions aimed at optimizing the patient’s physiology prior to surgery so-called Prehabilitation. The cornerstone of the PhD will be investigating the effect of intravenous iron in colorectal cancer patients with iron deficiency on both patient physiology, immunology, and postoperative outcomes such as physical fitness and complications. Thus, you will be conducting both multicenter clinical trials and basic research together with other colleagues investigating the effect of other means of prehabilitation.
Local resections of early colonic cancers
This multicenter trial will investigate the effect of local resections of early colonic cancers using a combined laparoscopic and endoscopic procedure (CELS). This novel surgical technique aims to reduce the surgical trauma in high-risk patients, and a pilot study of the feasibility of this procedure has already been conducted. The study will investigate the clinical effects of this new procedure on both postoperative outcomes and important safety measures, giving you a rare and unique possibility to be a part of the development of a surgical procedure.
As a PhD student, your daily work will be at the Department of Surgery at Zealand University Hospital in Køge, but also at collaborating hospitals. In both positions, you will be the coordinating investigator responsible for running a multicenter clinical study, and primary investigator at Zealand University Hospital that will include both patient contact, testing, and laboratory work. You will gain knowledge and experience in clinical research, and you will have a good opportunity for first authorships and co-authorships on publications (approx.. 3 per year). A detailed plan will be made for your PhD period, and you will be introduced to the department and undergo thorough training before you start.
Both positions are already fully funded.
Qualifications
You are required to possess good communication skills in Danish and English and to be a visible, involved participant in the unit’s activities, and willing to engage in collaborations across sectors.

Qualifications
- You must hold a master’s degree in medicine.
- Good communication and organizational skills
- Have a special interest in performing clinical trials in the field of oncology or surgery.
- You are dedicated, conscientious, and thorough in your work
