A PhD fellowship on video-based methods for studying social practices is available at the Department of Design and Communication at the University of Southern Denmark, Kolding, from 1 February 2021.
The successful applicant will be part of an interdisciplinary research team in social interaction and design that works on video data from everyday life and institutional interactions. The research team has special interests in studying and designing for marginalized citizen groups and societal challenges related to areas such as healthcare, crime, language learning and integration.
The successful applicant is expected to design his or her own project that relates technology developments to video ethnography, e.g. hybrid realities and cross realities. For instance, developing innovative ways to use video-based methods in the study of social practices within a specified contextual setting.
The teaching obligations in the project will be beginner and advanced courses in video production as part of the department’s educations in design and interaction studies. The successful applicant will share the responsibility for the department’s video lab with colleagues who use the lab in their teaching.

A PhD Fellowship is a three-year position. Employment ends automatically by the end of the period. The holder of the fellowship is not allowed to have other paid employment during the three-year period.
The successful applicant will be employed in accordance with the Protocol on PhD Research Fellow signed by the Danish Ministry of Finance and AC Cirkulære om overenskomst for Akademikere i staten 2019 (the document only exists in Danish).
To qualify for a PhD position you must have completed a relevant master's degree with a good assessment by the application deadline.

We only accept files in pdf-format no more than 10 MB per file. In case you have more than one file per field you need to combine the pdf-files into a single file, as each field handles only one file. We do not accept zip-files, jpg or other image files. All pdf-files must be unlocked and allow binding and may not be password protected.
Applications will be assessed by an assessment committee and the applicant will receive the part of the evaluation that concerns him/her. The assessment report will subsequently be forwarded to the Head of Department who will assemble an appointments committee. An interview may form part of the overall assessment of the applicants’ qualifications.
The committee may request additional information, and if so, it is the responsibility of the applicant to provide the necessary material.
If the application does not meet the requirements mentioned above, the Faculty of Humanities may reject your application without further notice. Applications received after the deadline will neither be considered nor evaluated.
Shortlisting and tests may be used in the assessment process. Please note that only a shortlisted applicant will receive an assessment.

- hold an MA degree in design, interaction studies, ethnography, linguistics or a related relevant social science;
- have state of the art knowledge of video technology;
- have a strong interest in becoming an expert in the study of social practices;
- enjoy working as part of a team;
- have good proficiency in academic English and - if the applicant does not speak Danish - be willing to learn Danish.

- Detailed CV, including personal contact information
- A research proposal/description of your approach to the project (max five pages excluding references)
- Copies of diplomas, Bachelor as well as Master's degree, including transcript of notes/grades.
- A maximum of 2 of the most relevant publications or writing samples, including MA thesis. Please note that publications are not a requirement for this position. Please attach one pdf-file for each piece of writing. For any publication with a co-author, a co-author statement must be submitted as part of the pdf-file
