Kolding

Design School Kolding hereby invites proposals for a PhD research project that focus on Design foresight in relation to sustainability and circular economy. The project is expected to contribute to design research and designing for sustainability.

Design School Kolding has EU funded projects and National funded projects within this focus for at least the next three years. The successful applicant will be able to make use of the network and activities within these projects to have strong peer-researcher and practitioner contacts from the beginning as well as opportunities to gather empirical data within these.

The PhD student will be part of one of the three laboratories at Design School Kolding, the Lab for Sustainability. Lab for Sustainability has a rich research history in relation to sustainability and circular economy, and the PhD student can expect to be part of a diverse, dynamic group. However, as some of the projects are also cross-field related the student can choose to also participate in activities in the other labs at Design School Kolding when these are related to the study.

It would be an advantage for applicants to relate their proposal to one or more established directions within design research with examples such as research-through-design; co-design and/or participatory design; design programme/design programmatic research or design-based action research. As the funded projects also include a high degree of community building, open partnership innovation and similar, the applicant can choose to point to this as a key focus or sub-focus in the proposal.

The applicant is expected to - as part of the project team - to contribute to Project Workpackages (WP) in relation to deliverables such as interviews, focus groups, contextual inquiries, scenario development, co-design workshops, community-building and similar.

The PhD student will be teaching at the BA/MA educations at Design School Kolding especially in courses related to design foresight, futures studies, plausible and preferred futures and in general in relation to sustainability. A suggestion and overview of how the PhD student suggests to do so, will be a preparation for what to present if selected for an interview for the PhD position.

Applicants with industry experience, project management, design management skills or project facilitation skills will be preferred, and if the applicant can demonstrate experience in moving from one organizational context to another, this will be a plus.

The proposed PhD project must follow the general rules for the doctoral program (see: https://www.designskolenkolding.dk/sites/default/files/rules_for_the_joint_phd_programme_of_aarhus_school_of_architecture_and_design_school_kolding_rev._2021.pdf ). We will prioritize proposals specifically pursuing an article-based dissertation consisting of a plurality of components or articles that are related in content and/or method, which is unified by a summary of the three general aspects mentioned in section 5.2 in the guidelines.

It is a basic requirement in the application:

  • to demonstrate an understanding of the fields of design foresight and design futures studies and design for sustainability.
  • to indicate a specific focus of interest within sustainability related foresight, circular economy, community building and open innovation.
  • to have a plausible and clearly expressed research question. You are welcome to add a few sub-research questions as well.
  • to have a clear description of the design research process by which the question(s) might be answered (what are you going to do to answer the question(s)?).
  • to include a preliminary research plan.

Applications will be assessed, among other factors, according to the richness and interest of the topic; the clarity of the explanation of how it might be explored; its relation to design research and practice, and especially the fit with the projects and teaching at DSKD.

The application must have the following sections:

  1. Introduction to the PhD project
  2. A positioning according to the fields to show familiarity with the field; indication of theory of research in design and sustainability.
  3. The research question clearly indicated including how it intends to contribute to the fields such as co-design/participatory design and/or design for sustainability.
  4. Proposed design research methodology.
  5. An account of the nature of the empirical data to be generated and whom to collaborate with.
  6. Bibliography/references
