Kongens Lyngby
We offer a research project on global formulation of the appearance of an object in terms of a macroscopic scattering function and the role that such functions can play in the specification of material appearance. There is currently no standardized way of specifying reflectance properties that include subsurface scattering. A general macroscopic reflectance function must include both in-surface and subsurface scattering of light. Such a function is a good candidate for specifying product appearance, but it is also a function of high dimensionality, which makes it an interesting challenge to find practical representations for it. Existing models are typically either impractical or limited in predictive quality. Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF) is an interesting new candidate for appearance specification. NeRF should be explored in this project. In particular, the NeRFactor variant that performs neural factorization of shape and reflectance could perhaps be extended in this project.
The PhD student will explore the predictive quality of existing models and develop new models for practical, predictive appearance specification. This research includes development of practical techniques for rendering with the models considered for appearance specification.
