Kongens Lyngby

The National Food Institute (DTU Food) offers two PhD positions within the field of microbiology and ecology of the intestine.

You will be part of the Research group for Gut, Microbes and Heath at DTU Food. We offer an ambitious, dynamic and sociable research environment with lots of exiting challenges and opportunities.

Responsibilities
The positions are affiliated to the project PRIMA (Personalized dietary Recommendations based on the Interaction between diet, Microbiome and Abiotic conditions in the gut) funded by the Challenge Programme under the Novo Nordic Foundation. This project is a cross-disciplinary effort involving top research environments in Denmark and Belgium. The overall aim of the project is to develop personal and improved dietary recommendations based on knowledge about the intestinal environment in a given individual.

PhD-1 in the PRIMA project will focus on application of in vitro models of intestinal bacterial communities to address microbial metabolic responses to specific nutritional and environmental conditions.

PhD-2 will focus on rodent models that elucidate effect of specific diets and intestinal conditions on the composition and metabolic activity of the gut microbiota.

Qualifications
You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.

Assessment
Candidates are expected to have interest and knowledge within intestinal microbiology and ecology. You need to be ambitious, highly motivated, and capable of working independently, and to have good skills within written and spoken English.

Preference will be given to candidates with experience within one or more of the following areas:
  • sequence-based analysis of bacterial communities, including bioinformatics
  • bacterial physiologic and metabolic responses to environmental factors
  • in vitro flow-based models of the gut bacterial community (PhD-1)
  • animal experimentation (PhD-2)

The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.

Interviews will take place during late August and September, and expected start of the new PhD students is 1 October 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter.
