Do you want to contribute to a sustainable future? Are you looking to establish yourself as a scientist? Then look no further! At the Danish Polymer Centre at the Technical University of Denmark, we are currently seeking a Ph.D. candidate to join a new Independent Research Fund Denmark-funded project focused on recyclable silicone elastomers from natural phenols. Silicone elastomers are used in many products, such as skin adhesives and soft electronics. Silicones are made from sand and are regarded as environmentally friendly materials due to their easy disintegration into the environment. However, their production from sand is highly energy extensive. It would thus be beneficial for society and the environment to make silicone elastomers from polymers/oligomers instead of starting from sand every time.

Responsibilities and qualifications
The project’s focus will be the design, synthesis, and characterization of novel silicone polymers and elastomers starting from natural phenols. The Ph.D. candidate will spend six months at McMaster University, Canada, to gain insight into advanced sustainable chemical synthesis methodologies. The research stay will be early in the Ph.D. project; thus, the Ph.D. candidate will subsequently contribute to the teaching and supervision of BSc and MSc students who will be engaged in the project in the later stages. We are looking for a highly motivated candidate who can work independently and in collaboration with colleagues and has excellent oral and written English skills. You should strive towards scientific excellence and be ambitious and hard-working.

You have experience or background in one or preferably more of the below-mentioned areas:

  • Organic and polymer synthesis
  • Characterization of polymers, including spectroscopical techniques
  • Have an MSc background in chemistry, chemical engineering, or materials science

You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU.
