Are you excited of being part of our newly established Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network MAGic-MOLFUN , funded by the European Union?
Together with 11 PhD students working at 7 leading universities, research centers and industrial partners you have the opportunity to contribute to a bio-sustainable future!
So-called “natural products” are everywhere. We use them as essential medicines, food preservatives, plant protecting agents and many more. MAGic-MOLFUN aims to integrate Natural Products Genome Mining, computational metabolomics and state-of-the art metabolic engineering and pathway discovery to develop ground-breaking tools and approaches to improve the discovery and characterization of novel natural products in bacteria and fungi, two major sources of bioactive compounds for applications in medicine, agriculture, food and biotechnology.
In this PhD project, supervised by Senior Researcher Kai Blin at the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Biosustainability of the Technical University of Denmark located close to Copenhagen, Denmark you will design new approaches and tools to predict Natural Product structures based on the genomic information of the producing organisms and integrate those predictions into the antiSMASH framework.
Responsibilities and qualifications
In your PhD project, you will develop bioinformatics approaches to predict the structures of Natural Product compounds based on the genomic data in their respective biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs). This work will happen in close collaboration with the other students in the MAGic-MOLFUN doctoral network and also the antiSMASH development team.
The specific tasks in this PhD project are:

The Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Biosustainability (DTU Biosustain)
Recent progress in our ability to read and write genomic code, combined with advances in automation, analytics and data science, has fundamentally changed the scope and ambition of harnessing the potential of biological systems. Big data approaches and analysis of biological systems are key research instruments at the Center. DTU Biosustain utilizes these advances for microbial cell factory design to foster sustainable lifestyles in relation to three application areas: Sustainable Chemicals, Natural Products, and Microbial Foods.
Technology for people
DTU develops technology for people. With our international elite research and study programmes, we are helping to create a better world and to solve the global challenges formulated in the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Hans Christian Ørsted founded DTU in 1829 with a clear mission to develop and create value using science and engineering to benefit society. That mission lives on today. DTU has 13,400 students and 5,800 employees. We work in an international atmosphere and have an inclusive, evolving, and informal working environment.
