Are you interested in understanding the factors that impact the effect of training and performance support in the Pharmaceutical industry’s production roles? Do you have an interest in the quality of training and operational performance, and for applying statistical methods in industrial training and digital learning technologies? Would you like to contribute to the design of digital training technology and the evaluation of its impact? Then you might be our new PhD student.

The Position
You will be involved in the ongoing development of a world class training system and collaborating with both industry and academia. Broadly speaking, the project is expected devise an evidence-based process for measuring the effect of training and performance support using digital learning technologies as well as traditional learning formats. The project will identify, map, and build on the factors that affect the impact of training and performance support in a variety of operational job roles.

Some of your key tasks will be to part of the following objectives within the Training Technology and Standards team of NovoNordisk and as a researcher of the learnT DTU centre:

  • Review the existing literature on pharmaceutical industry’s digital training technology and standards to establish the scope of contribution in the short-term and long-term evaluation mechanisms.
  • Define the process and conduct pilot evaluation
    • knowledge and skills of operators
    • attitude towards the tasks and responsibilities of the operator’s role
    • behaviour of the operator following completed training and while utilizing performance support tools (augmented instructions)
    • on deviations from the operating procedure due to the actions of the operator (i.e. errors made during operation, which can be characterized as “human errors”). Identify the reasons behind the difference in performance associated with the digital context of training and physical context of work.

  • Disseminate the scientific outcomes in international academic educational technology community through publication of papers in journals, books, and conferences
  • Develop and apply the methods and tools for valid measurement of impact of training and performance support
  • You have the motivation and ability to define, execute and achieve quality of the research and development activities in collaboration with your colleagues.


The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The position is a full-time position. The period of employment is 3 years starting March 1, 2022 (or as soon as possible thereafter).

You will be based at Novo Nordisk in Bagsværd, Denmark, but you can expect to work multiple days to weeks per year at the Product Supply Production sites around Greater Copenhagen and Kalundborg, Denmark.

Qualifications
Candidates should have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree. The master’s degree should be in computational science, computer engineering, information systems, statistics, data science, applied mathematics, or equivalent academic qualifications.

Preference will be given to candidates who can document experience in applied statistics, data science, statistical machine learning and experience in working with digital learning technologies, information systems, or learning analytics. Furthermore, good command of the Danish language is essential for field work and good command of English language is required for academic dissemination.

About the Department
The PhD project is a part of strategic collaboration project between NovoNordisk and DTU. The role of the PhD fellow will be affiliated with learnT – Center for Digital Learning Technology and the role in the practical context will be affiliated with the Novo Nordisk’s Training Technology and Standards unit. The project is financed by NovoNordisk.

LearnT is in the Section for Statistics and Data Analysis at DTU Compute dedicated to support other departments at DTU and external partners with skills, knowledge, and consultancy within the field of statistics and data analysis including biological and educational data. The section has special emphasis on statistics, quantitative genomics, bioinformatics, pattern recognition and software development. DTU Compute has a long history of conducting statistical consultancy and participating in research and publication collaboration with other departments at DTU, other universities and external partners. The basic purpose of the unit is to formalize this collaboration and contribute to even better research and public service sector consultancy at DTU.

The position is anchored at Novo Nordisk in the Global People & Organisation (HR) and “Training & Capability Building” consisting of 100+ training professionals. We focus specifically on the job specific training supporting employees working within the regulated production areas in Product Supply and Quality.

The team is responsible for the Training Standards used in the production areas and development of digital content such as videos, e-learning courses, Virtual and Augmented Reality solutions. The team consists of experienced Learning & Development Consultants and Training Developers responsible for setting direction and supporting the global training organisation and end users.
