We are seeking a dedicated Associate Scientist with expertise in cell culture process development. We have expertise in bioprocess development, stem cell biology and GMP compliance and truly believe that stem cell therapies will make a difference in the lives of patients. If this awakens your interest, please apply and support us in translating stem cell products into the clinics.

About the department

The department Stem Cell Process Development is part of Novo Nordisk’s new Stem Cell R&D unit, where we develop novel cell replacement therapies for the treatment of serious chronic diseases. Our department focuses on the development of manufacturing and control processes across the entire pluripotent stem cell workflow, starting with cell line derivation and ending with an efficacious and well-characterised product. Diabetes mellitus type 1, Parkinson’s disease and chronic heart failure are only some of the indications we are currently working on. You will join an international and dedicated group of 35 employees, including scientists, laboratory technicians and student workers.

The position

We are seeking a talented Associate Scientist to join our process development team, consisting of experienced scientists and laboratory technicians. In the field of cell therapy, products are typically the result of a long and complex in vitro cell expansion and differentiation processes. All steps in the process must be planned, executed and monitored carefully. Experimental results are analysed to identify favourable and robust cell culture conditions for consistent process outcome. In parallel to the process development research, cultivation batches are generated for in-vitro and in-vivo testing in disease models. The final cultivation processes are handed over to our Stem Cell Manufacturing department in the US for manufacturing of pre-clinical and clinal cell batches.

We are culturing human embryonic stem cells in 2D (adherent) and 3D (suspension) processes in conventional cell culture systems and in bioreactors, and we are operating a broad range of scales, from mL to L working volumes to be able to meet the needs for both cells and data in our research projects.

The position requires daily hands-on work in cell culture and bioreactor laboratories, and we work in project teams sharing tasks with colleagues from Stem Cell Research and Stem Cell manufacturing.

Qualifications

You are passionate about stem cell biology and bioprocess development and hold a master’s degree in cell biology, human biology, biotechnology or a similar field of studies. The ideal candidate has a few years of work experience, but we are also open to newly graduated. Industrial work experience is an advantage, but not a prerequisite. You enjoy being in the lab and have a strong background in mammalian cell culture and bioprocessing and have documented experience in working hands-on with cell culture and bioprocesses.

You like to analyse, interpret and discuss your scientific data with your colleagues and have a drive to take responsibility for your own projects and progress. Practical experience with stem cell culture and bioreactors are advantages. Ideally, you also have experience with flow cytometry analysis software and automatic liquid handling stations.

As a person, you are a dedicated and result-oriented team player who enjoys working in an innovative, international and open-minded environment. You can manage multiple projects in parallel and have a sound personal judgement to take decisions during your daily work. Finally, we expect you to be fluent in written and spoken English.
