A position as PhD (a PhD fellowship) in Pathophysiology of gastroparesis in diabetes and the possibilities to modulate it through advanced endoscopic techniques is offered at Center for Surgical Science in a period of 3 years (with an optional prolonged period related to the amount of clinical work related to the position) starting from beginning of 2022
CSS and research
CSS consists of a group of primarily medical doctors and medical students, molecular biologists, a pathologist, data scientists, bioinformaticians, data engineers, nurses, physiotherapists and dieticians. Our aim is to improve the treatment of patients with surgical diseases, minimize morbidity and optimize clinical outcomes. Through a cross-disciplinary research approach, we utilize the full spectrum of the available health information to tailor multi-modal interventions and characterize key issues for patients undergoing surgery in order to individualize pre-, intra- and postoperative treatment.
Project/job description
This phd study will be in collaboration with the department of Gastrointestinal Surgery and Endocrinology at Hvidovre University Hospital. Gastric per-oral endoscopic pyloromyotomy (G-POEM) is a promising novel minimally invasive endoscopic procedure, which may pose as a preferable alternative to medical treatment. Recent G-POEM studies in gastroparesis patients have demonstrated promising outcomes in terms of increased gastric emptying time and significant relief of gastrointestinal symptoms. Randomized sham-controlled G-POEM studies exclusively including diabetic patients are warranted to assess the possible beneficial effects on symptoms, glucose metabolism, meal induced releases of gastrointestinal hormones and gastrointestinal mechanics in patients with diabetic gastroparesis. You will be a part of a research collaboration between Center for Surgical science and Gastrointestinal Surgery and Endocrinology at Hvidovre University Hospital. You will be including patients to this randomized clinical trial and perform related advanced pathophysiological tests in the patient population and in addition perform a registry based analyses to describe the disease on population level.
