Odense C
The Technical University of Denmark (DTU) and Tasso A/S invite highly motivated graduates to apply for a 3-year PhD scholarship starting in October 2019 or soon thereafter. The PhD study will be conducted in the Manufacturing Engineering Section at the Department of Mechanical Engineering.
About the project
Implementation of automation and intelligent process control are essential technologies to keep the manufacturing industry competitive and to increase quality while at the same time ensuring that our resources are used and recycled in the best possible way. With this in mind, we will create a fast and reliable closed-loop control system for Tasso's continuous casting unit that will increase the company's product quality and production rate. In the project, we will develop the first-ever numerical model that simulates continuous casting of cast iron, with the objective of acquiring knowledge about critical process parameters and identifying appropriate locations for online sensors. The embedded sensors and numerical model will be used to derive unique response surfaces that link variations in process parameters with product quality, and to create a state-of-the-art control system with the ultimate goal of optimizing productivity.
The Danish company Tasso A/S operates specialized continuous casting equipment for production of grey and ductile cast iron. These metals are extremely popular for many practical applications because of their mechanical properties and low price. However, the casting process is complex and optimizing the quality and productivity of the production process is a challenge for which advanced process models are needed.
In the project “Advanced Process Models for Analysis and Process Control of Continuous Casting of Iron”, we will, through experiments and advanced modelling, analyse the horizontal continuous casting process. The experimental work will include development of a system to collect reliable information on the systems’ state including measurements of temperatures and flow rates inside the caster containing liquid iron. The aim is to create fundamental models describing relations between input parameters and productivity as well as product quality. The models shall form the basis for making a reliable closed-loop control system of Tasso´s continuous casting unit.
We offer
A rewarding and challenging position in a company with an ambition to reach manufacturing excellence in cooperation with people who bring in new ideas and perspectives. The candidate will be employed by Tasso A/S and will at the same time enrolled as a PhD candidate at DTU – Department of Mechanical Engineering. DTU is a leading technical university globally recognized for the excellence of its research, education, innovation and scientific advice. The position is a 3-year Industrial PhD project with the aim to be employed in Tasso A/S when the project is completed. The project is funded by Innovation Fund Denmark. The salary will be agreed upon with the relevant union.
