Job description
The PhD position is funded by the Danish Research Foundation and the successful candidate will be part of the project “Causal Inference with Many IVs: Using Mendelian Randomization to Estimate the Effects of Cannabis and Alcohol on Productivity and of Creativity and Risk Taking on Entrepreneurship”. The PhD candidate can expect to be part of an ambitious, interdisciplinary research group. Due to the inclusion in the research project, the PhD position will also have close ties to the iPSCHY research group and with the department of Economics at Boston College. The PhD candidate is expected to complete a research stay of three months at Boston College hosted by Professor Arthur Lewbel.
The first part of the project will focus on developing new methods that retain and expand the advantages of using several instrumental variables without imposing unrealistic assumptions on effect heterogeneity. These new methods will greatly enhance our ability to estimate causal effects in many settings where it was previously unfeasible without imposing unrealistic assumptions.
The remainder of the proposed project applies these new methods to two different settings where it is extremely difficult to estimate causal effect and where the new methods are expected to dramatically improve the credibility of the results. Both empirical studies rely on the idea of Mendelian randomization and will use a unique dataset on genetic markers (iPSYCH) to estimate and compare the causal effects of cannabis and alcohol abuse on educational attainment, labor market outcomes, and health outcomes and estimate the causal effects of creativity and risk propensity on the probability of engaging in entrepreneurial activities.
The successful applicant has:
Associate Professor Giovanni Mellace ([email protected]) will be the PhD main supervisor and Professor Arthur Lewbel will act as co-supervisor. For more information about the position please contact Giovanni Mellace via e-mail.
Further information about the programme can be obtained from the department’s PhD coordinator Professor Karol Jan Borowiecki ([email protected]).
