The Research Unit for Musculoskeletal Function and Physiotherapy, Department of Sports Science and Clinical Biomechanics, University of Southern Denmark - SDU (Campus Odense), invites applications for one 1.5-year postdoc position as part of the ‘REDucing Opioid use for osteoarthritis – the role of exercise therapy and patient education (REDO)’ study. The applicant will also be affiliated with the Research Unit for General Practice, Department of Public Health at SDU. The position is scheduled to start April 1st 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Analgesics is a core treatment for many patients with osteoarthritis, but there is a strong need to identify treatment alternatives that alone or in combination with ‘weaker’ type analgesics can reduce or eliminate opioid use for chronic pain conditions such as OA due to risk of adverse events and addiction. Using data from a large nation-wide OA patient database linked with prescription data and other relevant registries, the REDO projects aims to investigate if participation in exercise therapy and patient education is associated with decreased opioid dispensing in patients with knee and hip OA. The REDO project is funded by a grant from the ADVANCE 2019 program by Pfizer.

The applicant will assist the principal investigator in leading the REDO project, and will be responsible for finalizing the study protocol/analysis plan, data management and data analysis (depending on skills) and prepare and submit manuscripts. The postdoc is also expected to work closely with a number of national and international collaborators affiliated with the REDO project.

We are seeking highly motived and independent applicants with a PhD degree and a strong research track record. We welcome applicants with diverse research backgrounds, including, but not limited to physiotherapy, sports science, pharmacology or medicine.

Applicants with interest and documented experience in one or more of the following areas will be prioritized:

- Osteoarthritis (or other chronic pain conditions)
- Analgesics (pharmacology)-
- Register-based research
- Data management
- Statistics
- Team work
