The Department of Technology and Innovation, University of Southern Denmark, in Odense invites for applications to a 3-year PhD position in digital ship operations with an emphasis on smart maintenance of ships. The starting time is April 1st 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter. The location is at the main campus in Odense as well on the premises of industrial partners.
The successful candidate is expected to work actively in WP 1.3 of the national research and innovation platform ShippingLab (https://shippinglab.dk) and conduct application-oriented research with a team of industry partners in the deep-sea shipping sector. A key challenge of the shipping industry is to be able to monitor equipment performance and detect expensive or safety and missions critical engine break downs in due time while operating on the oceans. Ship owners and operators as well as equipment vendors have in recent years invested intensively in digital technologies as sensors, IOT devices, connectivity, data warehouses, cloud computing, business intelligence software etc. and are keen on reaping more business and economic benefits from those investments.
The objective of the PhD position is to develop, implement and test robust fault detection and predictive models for marine diesel engines and related equipment in close collaboration with a team of industry players (ship owners, operators, engine equipment provider, third-party specialist, etc.) to establish next-generation digital / AI models and application for smart equipment performance diagnostics and maintenance. The project supports the Industry 4.0 Strategy and Laboratory Initiative at University of Southern Denmark, a long-term strategic initiative created to support research, teaching, and industrial innovation across sectors.

Conditions of employment
Applicants are required to have a master’s degree (equivalent to a Danish master's degree) at the time of enrollment and employment. Employment as a PhD fellow is a 3-year salaried position (start salary amounts to approx. 3.378,- EURO per month incl. supplements).
Employment of a PhD fellow can only happen after the Head of the PhD School has approved the candidate for admission to the PhD school. Employment and enrollment will cease without further notice at the end of the period.
A PhD fellow is not allowed to have any kind of sideline employment, while enrolled as PhD fellow at the faculty.
Employment is governed by the Protocol on PhD Research Fellows signed by the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. Please check links for more information on salary and taxation.

Job description
- You will conduct research in the corresponding research area.
- You will develop and test one or more AI (mathematical / statistical / physics) models using open-source software.
- You will support industry partners in integrating the developed models/ software scripts in existing application onboard vessels or onshore.
- You will at instances support industry partners in implementing and using the models in daily operations.
- You will publish and present your work both at international conferences and in scientific journals with high impact.
- You will assist in teaching and project supervision activities.
Profile and requirements
- MSc degree in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Combustion Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Informatics or equivalent (equivalent to a Danish master's degree)
- Being familiar with or having a dedicated interest in exploring the domain of (digital) ship operations will be an advantage
- Comfortable with various programming languages and willingness to learn new if needed
- Experience with building and executing AI models in business / industrial settings will be an advantage
- Good written and oral communication skills
- Comfortable working both independently and within a team
- Willingness to support industrial partners and overall research project progress
- Interested in longer term commitment to a growing research group
- Interested in contributing to teaching / supervision
- Fluent in English, both spoken and written

- Completed TEK PhD application form for 5+3 applicants.
- Motivation letter stating your specific interest, motivation and qualifications for the project in question (max. two pages). Upload in the field called “Project description”.
- Detailed Curriculum Vitae, describing research, publication and teaching experience, computational skills and including personal contact information.
- Verified copies of the official bachelor diploma and master's diploma and transcripts of exams.
- Completed TEK PhD form for calculation grade point average. Upload in one of the fields called “Publication”.
- An official document describing the grading scheme of the awarding universities (if not Danish). Upload in one of the fields called “Publication”.
- An official and verified written assessment of the thesis or dissertation project from the grade giving institution, if the thesis/examination project is evaluated by approved/passed. The statement must clearly state that the candidate has been among the top 30 pct. in the graduation class for the study programme.
