Project title: How can we use mineral additions to protect marine biodiversity, increase ocean CO2 uptake and prevent ocean acidification?

The new Villum-funded group ‘Marine geoengineering- A tool to mitigate climate change?’ at the Department of Biology, University of Southern Denmark, invites applications from outstanding candidates who are interested in joining our team as PhD student. Application deadline: 9 April 2020.

The PhD project will tackle the impact of mineral additions on ocean pH values and CO2 uptake from the atmosphere both biologically and chemically. Focus of the selected PhD candidate will be to explore the direct response of microbes and primary producers (phytoplankton) to additions of different minerals to develop a strategy which can be applied in different ocean regions. Those culture experiments will be complemented by large scale field studies in Limfjorden and on the Islands of Cape Verde, where we will explore the impact of those mineral additions on natural communities. In this second part of the PhD project, the selected PhD candidate will use metagenomic, transcriptomic and single cell tools to determine community responses and to develop an appropriate strategy for maximum CO2 uptake and pH value stabilization.
