We are looking for one or more Research Assistants with the potential to develop a research topic for a subsequent full Ph.D. fellowship at the Demography Unit of the University of Southern Denmark’s Interdisciplinary Centre on Population Dynamics (CPop). A successful candidate will have the drive and the potential to, during a two to six month period, develop a research plan for a Ph.D. within the unit’s research areas.

The CPop Demography Unit is part of the Faculty of Business and Social Science. The Demography Unit collaborates with researchers in economics and political science, as well as researchers in other fields including evolutionary ecology, conservation biology, mathematics and data analysis in the Faculty of Natural Science, epidemiology, biostatistics, biodemography and health economics in the Faculty of Health Sciences, and literature and media science in the Faculty of Humanities.

It would be desirable if an applicant has (or will soon receive) an M.A. in Demography or Economics. An applicant should be strongly committed to interdisciplinary research on population dynamics.
The Unit is looking for applicants with a solid education in or experience with statistical and mathematical methods.

It would be desirable if an applicant is interested in research in one or more of the following areas:
- forecasting mortality and health after age 50 and especially after age 90,
- understanding the causes of inequality of lifespans after age 50 and the characteristics of people with short vs. long lifespans,
- understanding and modelling impacts of demographic aging on health and long term care demand and expenditure, e.g. “healthy aging",
- modeling the difference between and the ratio of male and female death and morbidity rates over age, time and population, and/or
- analyzing the dynamics of fertility by adapting methods devised to study the dynamics of mortality.

Furthermore, it would also be desirable if an applicant was interested in statistical methods for analyzing large data sets. Knowledge of SAS or R and of deep learning methods would be useful.

If appropriate, applicants may be encouraged to apply to the one-year course of study of the European Doctoral School of Demography, which will be held in Rostock, Germany in September and October, 2020, and then in Barcelona from November 2020 through July 2021, which offers a master’s degree. If accepted, CPop will cover a scholarship for the applicant for this program followed by a fellowship for doctoral research in Odense.
