SDU Center for Energy Informatics (CEI) is an interdisciplinary industry-oriented research and innovation center with an international outlook. The center focuses on development of innovative digital energy solutions that can facilitate the transition towards a sustainable energy system. The center is part of the Faculty of Engineering, University of Southern Denmark, and located at the main Campus in Odense, Denmark.

CEI invites applications for a number of fully-funded 3-year PhD positions. The starting date for the positions is as soon as possible in 2020, and it will be agreed with the successful candidate. Application deadline is June 1st, 2020.

Profile and requirements
We are looking for highly motivated and ambitious students with excellent knowledge of English (written and spoken), who can work well in a team as well as independently and quickly acquire knowledge in new topics.

Preferred candidates are required to have a master’s degree in engineering or applied physics with documented educational experience in the topics of mathematics, physics, energy system engineering, statistics, optimization, control theory, mathematical modeling and basic programming such as MatLab or C.

If at the time of application, the applicant has not yet obtained a master’s degree, a letter from the master thesis supervisor attesting to the eligibility of the applicant must be provided.

The PhD projects
The announced PhD positions are part of implementing the center’s strategic research objectives within the following areas:

Automated data validation, proactive and predictive maintenance for energy systems and processes

The project aims to develop a diagnostic tool for data validation and reconstruction, automatic fault detection and diagnosis, and fault and critical event prediction for digital energy systems. The tool enables predictive maintenance which is a more proactive and efficient maintenance strategy than the currently used inefficient “wait until it breaks” maintenance approach. The development of the diagnostics tool and framework will be carried-out in close collaboration with industry and includes case studies from the center’s research and development projects.

Optimization of energy system design and operation through utilization of automated identification and quantification of demand-side flexibility

The project aims to develop and apply component-based energy system models for optimal system design and operation in a highly flexible distributed multimodal energy system. It will include development of methods for data-based automation of identifying the components flexibility with centralized and decentralized storage options. It will focus on consumers flexibility on various levels to allow for holistic optimization of operation in a future smart energy system. The project will include case studies from the center’s research and development projects on energy flexible buildings, building clusters, island systems, ports facilities and industries.

The application must include a research plan of max. 3 pages, indicating the candidates expected research for the 3-year PhD period. The plan must include problem motivation, state of art, research question, proposed methodology, and expected results. The research plan must address one of the announced areas and indicate the applicants’ competence to execute the research plan. Research plans addressing other than the announced research areas will not be considered.
