The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Southern Denmark (Campus Odense) invites applications for a PhD scholarship in computer science funded by the Horizon 2020 project Drones4Safety. The successful applicant would become part of the Data Science & Statistics research group.
The proposed starting date is 1 July 2020 or soon thereafter. The appointment will be made for a term of three years at a competitive salary and will follow the general PhD study programmes at SDU. Application deadline: 29 May 2020.
The ideal candidate has a background in or experience with one or more of the following topics:
• Unmanned aerial systems & robotics
• Autonomous agents & artificial intelligence
• Routing, path planning, & optimization.
The successful candidate will contribute to the development of a Drone Inspection as a Service (DIaaS) cloud-based platform for mission control and navigation of drone systems that allows users to:
• Plan inspection missions with a given drone system
• Execute inspection missions by deploying a drone system
• Monitor the state and location of a drone system
• Control a drone system remotely and safely
• Deliver inspection images, sensory data, and on-board analysis results to analysis systems.
The applicant is expected to hold a relevant MSc degree that provides as sufficient degree of mathematical, statistical, and computer engineering background. Fluency in English and excellent programming capabilities in at least Python and C/C++ are required. MSc candidates about to complete will also be considered and should attach a statement from their supervisors regarding their impending completion.

Appointment as a PhD Research Fellow is for three years. Employment stops automatically at the end of the period. The holder of the scholarship is not allowed to have other paid employment during the three-year period. Please check links for more information on salary and taxation.
The successful applicant will be employed in accordance with the agreement on salaried PhD scholars between the Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations).
The successful candidate will be enrolled at this university in accordance with faculty regulations and the Danish Ministerial Order on the PhD Programme at the Universities (PhD order).
