The Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) Center at the Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller Institute at the SDU, invites applicants for a postdoctoral research fellowship in the area of autonomous drone design for navigation near overhead energized cables. The starting date for the position is as soon as possible in 2020, and it will be agreed with the successful candidate. Application deadline is 15. September, 2020.

The research area
The Postdoc is expected to perform high-quality research as a part of the research and innovation project “EU H2020 Drones4Safety” that is funded by EU H2020. Drones4Safety is an innovative drone project that aims to build autonomous drone swarm systems to inspect railway and bridge infrastructures while recharging themselves from the nearby overhead cables.

The Postdoc research will be focusing on developing an autonomous drone system that navigates and grasps on energized overhead cables while mitigating the electromagnetic interferences. The Postdoc will expect to contribute to the research and development activities that are running at the UAS Centre and be an active member in the project team. The Postdoc will be mainly supervised by Associate Professor Emad Samuel Malki Ebeid*, and working closely with highly-skilled researchers and engineers at SDU UAS Centre and the international project partners.

Profile and requirements

The successful candidates will be expected to have:

  • PhD degree in robotics, drones, control, mechatronics, electronics engineering, or related fields.
  • Publications in drones and autonomous systems field are required.
  • Practical experience with FPGAs, GPUs, ROS, sensor fusion, and AI are needed.
  • Excellent programming skills (e.g., Python, C++, VHDL, MATLAB).

Additionally, the candidate should have excellent writing skills and be able to work independently.

Research environment
The successful candidate for the position will be affiliated with the University of Southern Denmark, Faculty of Engineering, SDU UAS Centre.

University of Southern Denmark’s UAS Center brings together experts in robotics, computer vision, physics, software engineering, mechanical engineering, and cyber-physical systems to focus on research, education, innovation, and collaboration in the UAS domain.

Conditions of employment
Employment as a postdoc requires scientific qualifications at PhD level. Employment as a postdoc is temporary and will cease without further notice at the end of the period.

Research will be predominant in the position. Teaching assignments can be agreed individually. Furthermore, other types of assignments may occur to a limited degree. The Faculty determines the distribution of the various assignments. The weighting of the different assignments may vary over time. The successful applicant will be employed in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations.
