A three-year PhD position is available at the Department of Biology, University of Southern Denmark (SDU). The start date is 1 September 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter. Application deadline: 1 August 2020.

Project area
Denmark is rather unique in regard to restoration of lakes and reestablishment of new lakes. Since 1990, Denmark alone has planned for the establishment of more than 2985 ha of shallow lakes. The initiative is partial compensation for the removal of more than 200 larger Danish lakes during the preceding 200 years, a historical development mirrored in North America and throughout Europe, where about 80 % of wetland areas, including shallow lakes, were drained and reclaimed for agriculture. Furthermore, freshwater lakes in Europe and throughout the world are in a poor condition, mainly due to decades of heavy nutrient pollution. The main cause of poor water quality is phosphorous, which is an essential nutrient for all living organisms and causes excessive growth of phytoplankton, leading to reduced light conditions, increased oxygen consumption and loss of biodiversity in our lakes.

New lakes and wetlands are created with different goals and this PhD project will help to contribute to the understanding of what regulates the environmental quality and how establishment of newly created aquatic ecosystems and restoration of existing lakes can alter the carbon and nutrient turnover.

The PhD scholarship covers the area of aquatic ecology, biogeochemistry and modelling and will be aligned with ongoing research at the Freshwater Ecology group at the Department of Biology, SDU. The fellowship will be part of a group working with phosphorous and carbon turnover and greenhouse gas emissions from wetlands, streams, and lakes.

The PhD candidate will be appointed to the Department of Biology, SDU with a main supervisor Theis Kragh ([email protected]) and co-supervisors Kasper Reitzel (SDU) and Kaj Sand-Jensen (University of Copenhagen).

Qualifications
We are looking for an enthusiastic and ambitious candidate with an MSc degree in biology obtained by 1 August 2020. The position is open to both Danish and international applicants. Experience with freshwater ecology and good English language skills will be required. The main criterion for selection will be the research potential of the applicant, i.e. publications will be a strong asset. Driver’s license is needed.

For further information please contact Associate Professor Theis Kragh, tel.: +45 6550 2710, e-mail: [email protected].

Application, salary etc.
Appointment as a PhD Research Fellow is for three years. Employment stops automatically at the end of the period. The holder of the scholarship is not allowed to have other paid employment during the three-year period.

The successful applicant will be employed in accordance with the agreement on salaried PhD scholars between the Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations). Please check links for more information on salary and taxation.

The successful candidate will be enrolled at this university in accordance with faculty regulations and the Danish Ministerial Order on the PhD Programme at the Universities (PhD order).
