The Biotechnology Section at the Department of Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology and Environmental Technology at University of Southern Denmark (SDU) invites applicants for a 12 month postdoctoral research fellowship in microbiology and biomaterials. The postdoc fellowship may be full-time or part-time, as agreed between the applicant and PI and the position may be extended if additional funds are acquired for the project during 2021, but there is no guarantee that the position will be extended. The position will be available starting August 2020.
The position is funded as part of the Innoexplorer projet “new drugs for resistant Enterobacteriaceae” that will use a novel technology to discover new microorganisms with anti-microbial properties. The Postdoc will work on exploring potential patentable applications of the project and therefore there may be limitations on when the results can be published.
The main part of the work will aim at using 3D printed bioreactors and substrates for baiting and culturing microorganisms from the environment and then characterizing these microorganisms and their function in vitro to identify species that produce anti-microbial substances. These substances will then be isolated and tested in vivo. The postdoc may also become involved in other projects on RNA based drugs. Part of the project will be carried out in collaboration with the Department of Clinical Microbiology at the Faculty of Health and the postdoc may end up spending the majority of his/her time there. It is very important that the postdoc is careful and organized and comfortable with working with pathogens in a biosafety environment.
Profile and requirements
The ideal candidate for the position should have:
Note that not all of the above points are expected to be met, and that the project will be carried out in close collaboration with the project PI.
The young and aspiring Biotechnology section is offering complementary competences within the biotechnology field. The section currently includes two PhD students and a number of master and bachelor students and collaborates with different industry partners.
Contact information
For more information, please contact Project PI Associate Professor Morten Østergaard Andersen at email: [email protected] or the Head of the Biotechnology section Eva Arnspang Christensen at email: [email protected].
