The Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) Center at the Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller Institute at the University of Southern Denmark, invites applicants for a 4+4 PhD position in autonomous drone system design for navigation and grasping over overhead cables for inspection and recharging. The starting date for the positions is 1. September 2020. The application deadline is 3. August 2020.
Profile and requirements
We are looking for a highly motivated and ambitious student with excellent knowledge of English (written and spoken), who can work well in a team as well as independently and quickly acquire knowledge in new topics.
The preferred candidate is required to be enrolled in a TEK master’s programme in engineering with a documented educational experience in the topics of electronics, mathematics, physics, embedded systems, and computer programming.
The PhD project
The announced PhD position is a part of the EU H2020 project, Drones4Safety. Drones4Safety is an innovative drone project that aims to build autonomous drone systems to inspect railway and bridge infrastructures while recharging themselves from the nearby overhead cables.
The PhD research aims to develop and implement an autonomous drone system to detect and grasp on thin overhead cables (railways and high-voltage cables) for recharging. The developed drone system will enable continuous drone operations near energized infrastructures. The development of the drone system will be carried out in close collaboration with European academic and industrial expertise in AI, energy harvesting, and infrastructure inspection.
The application must include a research plan of max. 3 pages, indicating the candidate's expected research for the 4-year PhD period. The plan must include problem motivation, state of art, research question, proposed methodology, and expected results. The research plan must indicate the applicants’ competence to execute the research plan.

Important information before applying
To be considered for the position it is required that the applicant is enrolled in a Master's programme (kandidatuddannelse) at the Faculty of Engineering, SDU, and has completed the first year at the time for enrollment.
The 4+4 PhD fellowship programme is divided into a 22 months grant period followed by an employment period. When the master's degree (kandidatuddannelse) is achieved and you as least have attained a grad of 10 (Danish scale), you will be employed at the same terms as a 3-year PhD fellowship. The enrollment and employment will cease without further notice at the end of the 4-year period. A PhD fellow is not allowed to have any kind of sideline employment, while enrolled as PhD fellow at the faculty.
Employment is governed by the Protocol on PhD Research Fellows signed by the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations.

- Detailed Curriculum Vitae.

- Copies of the official bachelor diploma and transcripts of exams plus master's transcripts of exams.
- Completed TEK PhD form for calculation grade point average. Upload in one of the fields called “Publication”.
- An official document describing the grading scheme of the awarding universities (if not Danish). Upload in one of the fields called “Publication”.
- References, if any. You're welcome to use the form for reference letter at the faculty website.
- List of publications and maximum 2 examples of relevant publications, if available. Please attach one pdf-file for each publication.
