The Electrical Engineering Section at The Department of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, University of Southern Denmark (SDU), invites applications for one or more 3-year PhD position(s) in power electronics with emphasis on design of compact and high-efficiency dc-dc converters for professional working vehicles. The starting date for the position(s) is 1 March 2021, or as soon as possible thereafter.
The PhD project
The PhD position is part of the Danish Energy Technology Development and Demonstration (EUDP) program project eWorkVehiclePower – Hybrid fuel cell and battery powering unit for working vehicles. The PhD project will provide research into compact high-efficiency power converters for hybrid fuel cell and battery powered vehicle applications. The research focus will include optimum topology selection, design of compact high-frequency magnetic components, optimum application of WBG power devices and experimental verification and demonstration of converter prototypes.

Research environment
The successful candidates will be affiliated with the Electrical Engineering Section at the Department of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, University of Southern Denmark, which is located at the Faculty of Engineering on the international campus in Odense, Denmark. The power electronics group is focusing on research in compact high-efficiency dc-dc and ac-dc converters in the medium power range of 1-100kW. Research topics includes converter topologies, advanced magnetic component design, application of wide bandgap semiconductors, compact filter design and advanced converter control. The power electronics group has a long tradition for close collaboration with leading regional, national and international industries and academia in the field. The research group has world-class laboratory facilities that are continuously being expanded and maintained.

Conditions of employment
Applicants are required to have a master’s degree (equivalent to a Danish master's degree) at the time of enrollment and employment. Employment as a PhD fellow is a 3-year salaried position (start salary amounts to approx. 3.378,- EURO per month incl. supplements).
Employment of a PhD fellow can only happen after the Head of the PhD School has approved the candidate for admission to the PhD school. Employment and enrollment will cease without further notice at the end of the period.
A PhD fellow is not allowed to have any kind of sideline employment, while enrolled as PhD fellow at the faculty.
Employment is governed by the Protocol on PhD Research Fellows signed by the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. Please check links for more information on salary and taxation.

What we expect
The successful applicant will be expected to have:
- Master’s degree (equivalent to a Danish master's degree) in Electronics or Electrical Engineering.
- A strong background and interest in Power Electronics, especially in the field of design of high-efficiency dc-dc converters with demonstrated competencies in simulation, modelling and design of magnetic components.
- Excellent writing and oral skills in English and ability to work independently.
- Good collaboration and communication skills.

- Motivation letter stating your specific interest, motivation and qualifications for the project in question (max. 2 pages). Upload in the field called “Project description”.
- Detailed Curriculum Vitae, describing research, publication and teaching experience, computational skills and including personal contact information.
- A research statement. Upload in the field called “Other relevant material”.
- Verified copies of the official bachelor diploma and master's diploma and transcripts of exams, both original and translated into English.
- Completed TEK PhD form for calculation grade point average. Upload in one of the fields called “Publication”.
- An official document describing the grading scheme of the awarding universities (if not Danish). Upload in one of the fields called “Publication”.
- An official and verified written assessment of the thesis or dissertation project from the grade giving institution, if the thesis/examination project is evaluated by approved/passed. The statement must clearly state that the candidate has been among the top 30 pct. in the graduation class for the study programme.
- Three names and e-mails of researchers who can provide an informed reference letter at short notice
