The Department of Clinical Research, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Southern Denmark (SDU) and the Molecular Endocrinology Unit (KMEB), Department of Medical Endocrinology, University of Southern Denmark, invites applications for a postdoctoral position to study Stromal Cell Heterogeneity in Osteoporosis using Advanced Functional Genomics. The position is available for 3 years. The starting date is April. 1st 2021 or at the selected candidate’s earliest convenience.

Job description

Alexander Rauch, has recently established his own research group which is founded through a major grant from the Lundbeck Foundation. We combine experimental and computational systems approaches to obtain unprecedented insights into the heterogeneity of bone marrow resident progenitor cells that give rise to bone forming osteoblasts. Our group is part of the Molecular Endocrinology and Stem Cell Research Unit at the Department of Endocrinology, Odense University Hospital which constitutes an international, ambitious, highly dynamic, and well-equipped working environment. The Unit has access to clinically relevant patient material and state-of-the-art facilities for stem cell phenotyping, flow cytometry, bioimaging, immunohistochemistry and transgenic mouse work. Strategic research alliances have been established with the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at SDU for next generation sequencing, single-cell transcriptomics, metabolomics and mass spectrometry. Our goal is to understand how these stromal cells receive and respond to signals at the level of the (epi)-genome and how changes in the composition of progenitor subpopulations contribute to the pathology of metabolic bone diseases.

As a postdoc in the group you will be one of the main drivers of this highly ambitious and interdisciplinary project. You will interact and collaborate closely with other researchers from the Molecular Endocrinology and Stem Cell Research Unit, headed by Moustapha Kassem, and Functional Genomics and Metabolism Research Unit, headed by Susanne Mandrup. You will map stromal cell heterogeneity of the human bone marrow during homeostasis and longitudinally in patients with osteoporosis using single cell transcriptomics and computational approaches. Based on these data you will establish a FACS-based isolation procedure for distinct subpopulations that will be tested for their bone forming potential in ectopic bone formation and fracture models. Some of these findings will be translated into clinical intervention studies or into functional studies in transgenic mouse models. You are expected to provide substantial general input to projects in our groups, and you will have the opportunity to develop your own ideas within our research frame.

Qualifications

We are looking for highly motivated, dedicated and ambitious scientists with:

  • A PhD degree in Life or Medical Science, preferable Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Biomedicine, Endocrinology or Computational Systems Biology
  • Documented expertise in stem cell biology, cell sorting and/or NGS data analysis
  • Ideally at least one first author publication in a relevant journal in the field
  • Strong communication and collaborative skills and an interest in working in an interdisciplinary environment
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English
