The Research Unit of Cardiology, Department of Clinical Research, University of Southern Denmark invites applications for a position as associate professor of cardiac care (20% time) to be filled from March 1, 2021 or as soon as possible hereafter for a period of five years.
In order to increase the research activity within the field of cardiology, the successful applicant will be expected to contribute to the development of research and clinical work in cardiology in the Department of Cardiology with special emphasis on research within optimizing patient pathways, outcome assessment (e.g., patient-reported outcomes and frailty assessment), and patient involvement .
The associate professor will be expected to participate in the further development of both interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary collaboration both nationally and internationally and in mentoring of PhD-students and other junior researchers.
Odense University Hospital (OUH) is the largest hospital in Denmark and the only hospital with all medical specialties at the same campus.
Department of Cardiology
Information on the Department of Cardiology OUH can be found here: https://en.ouh.dk/department/cardiology-3/ . The department is a highly specialized department of cardiology within the Region of Southern Denmark providing service to a population of 1.2 million citizens. The department is headed by chief consultant Tina Svenstrup Poulsen and chief nurse Helle Marie Mogensen.
In total, the department has approximately 350 employees, including physicians, nurses, and medical secretaries. Currently, the medical staff consists of 1 chief consultant, 33 consultants and staff specialists and 25 junior doctors. Clinical services In Denmark, hospital services are defined at three levels. Main functions will be available at all or most hospitals. Regional functions will be available at one or more hospitals in the region while highly specialized functions are only available at 1-3 hospitals in the country.
The Research Unit of Cardiology

Currently, the Research Unit comprises six clinical professors, three adjunct professors, one post doc and two lecturers with special research obligations. The Research Unit has allocated fifteen ongoing PhD projects and five Master’s students. The Research Unit publishes an increasing number of peer reviewed papers annually and expects to exceed 125 peer review publications in 2020. The department aims at expanding research and development further and specifically cover all highly specialized treatments offered within the field of cardiology.
Research tasks
The department aims to expand and develop research within ischemic heart disease and outcome assessments in a broad sense. Thus, the candidate must be able to - as associate professor - to build up the research field as concerns the research strategy and will be free to use different research methodologies according preferences and identified research needs and goals.
The associate professor will be expected to take part in communicating the research results to the general public. Moreover, the associate professor will be expected to perform public duties as concerns chair commissions and boards etc.
Teaching tasks
The applicant must anticipate teaching at the pre- and post-graduate courses offered by the Faculty of Health Sciences. These obligations include teaching at the PhD-program.
Clinical tasks
The associate professor will get clinical duties and will be responsible for ensuring evidence-based development of the clinical care in the department. The department has focus on implementation of patient-reported outcome (PRO) measurements and patient involvement, and wants to increase the use of outcome assessments in general. The associate professor will be expected to take part in work with observation, diagnostic, treatment and evaluation of patients with ischemic heart disease.
Expectations of qualifications
It will be expected that the applicant is experienced in observation, diagnostic and treatment of patients with cardiac diseases. The applicant must have substantial skills in both clinical aspects and research within the field of cardiology. Responsibility will be agreed upon in connection with a possible recruitment.
Formal training in academic teaching (e.g. “Pædagogisk kursus for kliniske lektorer” or "universitetspædagogikum") will be required. Teaching experience at university level is necessary for the position.

- Research experience documented by international peer-reviewed journal articles within the fields of cardiology.
- Experience within cardiology
- Results within research in the field of cardiology and/or outcome assessment documented by a list of publications
- Dynamic performance as documented by peer-reviewed publications
- Track record in obtaining research funding
- International research collaboration and collaborations with researchers in other disciplines and sectors
- Effective oral and written communication and interpersonal skills
