SDU Biorobotics at the Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller Institute, University of Southern Denmark, invites applications for one or more postdoctoral positions in Soft Robotics. The starting date for the positions is April 1st, 2021, but will be agreed upon with the successful candidate.

About the position
We offer fully funded postdoctoral position(s) in Soft Robotics for a duration of 18 months and the possibility of renewal depending on the candidate’s performance. As a postdoc, you will develop and carry out an original research project, and communicate scientific results in leading, high-ranked scientific journals and international conferences. We are particularly interested in realizing a systems-level integration in designing and building soft robots. Potential projects include:
  • Autonomous bioinspired soft robots for dexterous manipulation and soft locomotion
  • Integration of decentralized soft actuators with flexible multifunctional electronic skins
  • Bioinspired collaborative soft robots and soft robot swarms
  • Novel soft robotics elements inspired by Nature
  • Computational tools for the design of bioinspired soft robots

Research environment
The University of Southern Denmark in Odense is a rich environment for research and innovation within robotics and automation. SDU Biorobotics spans a broad range of expertise and research interests, including soft robotics, robot swarms, artificial intelligence, bio-inspired control, embedded electronics, and mechatronics.

The Center for Soft Robotics is a new and growing research group in SDU Biorobotics. We design, build and program next-generation bioinspired soft robots that use compliance as an integral part of their intelligence. In our research, we aim for a systems-level integration in designing and building soft robots. We use innovative soft materials and structures to develop AI matter and imbue soft robots with embedded sensing and interactive functionalities. Then, we adopt biologically inspired control and learning strategies to enable such soft machines to communicate efficiently with humans through aesthetic expressions and navigate dexterously through complex terrains.

The Center for Soft Robotics is an engaging and collaborative environment where we work together with other researchers and our industrial partners to translate the outcome of our research into impactful applications.

SDU Biorobotics is placed at SDU main campus in Odense, the third largest city in Denmark. Denmark is known for its high standards of living and free health care. Applicants from outside Denmark are eligible for substantial tax reductions. Please see the below links for detailed information on salaries, taxation, and working in Denmark.

About the candidate
We are looking for a highly motivated, competent, and enthusiastic scientist with excellent communication skills. For consideration, applicants must have:
  • A recent PhD degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, robotics, computer science, or a related field
  • Familiarity with techniques and problems of making and working with soft robots
  • Interest in soft robotics and interdisciplinary research, and drive to design and fabricate physical robots and preferably with experience in programming
  • Publications in high-quality international peer-reviewed journals
  • A good command of English (written and spoken).
  • A sensible but challenging proposed research direction focused on systems-level aspects of soft robotics will be an advantage

The successful candidates are expected to participate in the teaching activities of the Center for Soft Robotics and SDU Biorobotics. Besides, they are strongly encouraged to continuously develop their career prospect through drafting original hypothesis-driven research proposals for acquiring external funding.
