New local treatment of osteoporotic hip fractures – A Regenerative Medicine Approach to Improve Implant Anchorage in Fragile Bone and Reduce Reoperations

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology, Odense University Hospital and Department of Clinical Research at SDU is looking for applicants for a PhD scholarship within the field of Regenerative Medicine.

Research environment
As a joint PhD project, we collaborate closely with Department of Orthopaedics, Lund University Hospital, Sweden. The successful PhD student will be working mainly at the Orthopaedic Research laboratory, Odense University Hospital, and may include a research visit to Lund.
Our laboratory includes 1 Professor, 1 Postdoc, 2 PhD students, 2 pregraduate students, and 1 coordinated laboratory technician, with research focus on bone tissue engineering and regeneration.
Our departments have all the necessary equipment and methodologies for the project, including semi-nano-CT, micro-CT, PET/SPECT-CT, confocal microscopy, MTS hydraulic mechanical testing system, various tissue saws, and histology / histomorphometry units.
We have access to the facilities for small and large animal researches at Biomedical Laboratory, SDU.

Project description
The primary objective of this project is to enhance the anchorage of a fracture fixation device/implant to poor quality osteoporotic bone.
Particularly, we 1) test local delivery of zoledronic acid (ZA) using hydroxyapatite (HA) particles via a novel technique to enhance bone-implant integration in normal and osteoporotic sheep models; and 2) evaluate local implantation of millions of synthetic HA particles around an implant and attract systemically circulating ZA to enhance bone-implant integration in an osteoporotic sheep model.
The outcomes will be assessed by the methods described above. The results will provide important information to a feasibility trial in osteoporotic patients.

Qualifications
We are looking for a person with a relevant degree (MD, MSc. etc.) with acquired competences within the fields of bone tissue engineering and regeneration.
The applicant is expected to have an knowledge within one of the fields and an interest in gaining knowledge within the other field.
A tracked record of research experiences and publications is an advantage.
