Two PhD positions in bioorganic chemistry / chemical biology are available at the Department of Physics and Chemistry, University of Southern Denmark. Application deadline: 31 May 2021. Starting date of the position will be 1 August 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter.
Epigenetics most often refer to processes, such as enzymatic modifications of DNA and numerous posttranslational modifications of the associated histone proteins, that lead to the transfer of genetic information from generation to generation, without changes in the underlying sequence of DNA. To understand the enormous intricacy of the epigenetic language, it is necessary to deepen our knowledge, at the atomic level, of biomolecular recognition of posttranslational modifications of histones.
As a PhD student, you will work on the project aimed at providing the most comprehensive and complete understanding of biomolecular recognition and biocatalysis processes in epigenetics that play key roles in human health and disease. You will apply modern chemical biology approaches, ranging from synthesis and peptide synthesis to protein science and enzyme assays, in investigations of biologically important posttranslational modifications on histone proteins. You will also develop new chemical tools for investigations of posttranslational modifications that are important for normal functioning of the brain.
Specific Requirements
• MSc in chemistry
• Experience with organic chemistry
• Experience with peptide or protein research
• Strong motivation and interest in working at the interface between chemistry and biology
• Excellent skills in written and spoken English.
For further information please contact Associate Professor Jasmin Mecinovic, e-mail: [email protected].
Application, salary etc.
Appointment as a PhD Research Fellow is for three years. Employment stops automatically at the end of the period. The holder of the scholarship is not allowed to have other paid employment during the three-year period.
