SDU Center for Energy Informatics (CEI) is an interdisciplinary industry-oriented research and innovation center with an international outlook. The center focuses on development of innovative digital energy solutions that can facilitate the transition towards a sustainable energy system. The center is part of the Faculty of Engineering (TEK), University of Southern Denmark, and located at the main Campus in Odense, Denmark.
SDU Center for Energy Informatics invites applications for a number of 4+4 PhD positions. The starting date for the positions is September 1st, 2021.
Profile and requirements
To apply for the 4+4 PhD positions, it is required that the applicant is enrolled in one of the TEK master’s programmes within software engineering, energy informatics or computer science and has completed the first year at the time for enrollment.
We are looking for highly motivated and ambitious students with excellent knowledge of English (written and spoken), who can work well in a team as well as independently and quickly acquire knowledge in new topics.
The PhD projects
In the motivation letter, the applicant has to state the project number of the PhD project the applicant applies for. If the applicant wants to apply for more than one project, the applicant has to provide a prioritized list.
Project 1: Ecosystem-based evaluation of long-term energy system resiliency and sustainability
The PhD research aims to develop and implement an ecosystem-based evaluation framework that contributes to the design of resilient and sustainable energy systems. The evaluation framework will enable large-scale and long-term integration of Distributed Renewable Energy Resources and facilitate sector coupling (Power to Heating/Cooling/Gas) through multi-dimensional assessment and future scenario simulations. The PhD research is part of a new DANIDA project - Microgrid Technologies for Remote Indonesian Islands.
Project 2: Automatic Data Validation, Fault and Anomaly Detection and Diagnosis for Operation and Energy Performance Improvement
The PhD research will focus on the development of data validation, fault and anomaly detection, and diagnosis methods and software algorithms using the data which are obtained from wireless sensors, smart meters, etc. The methods enable a scalable and adjustable approach to diagnostics. The algorithms will be implemented on building energy systems and district heating networks from the center’s research and development projects in close collaboration with the industry.
Project 3: Component based energy system modeling for model predictive control
The PhD research aims to extend existing- and develop new-component based libraries for energy system modeling. The models will be both on individual component level as well as on whole system level. They will include both grey and black box models including use of machine learning techniques for model identification. The work will focus on the Dymola/Modelica modeling platform and the Functional Mockup Interface (FMI) which will be the line of model exchange into the multi-objective genetic algorithm based optimization platform also originating from CEI. The work will contribute into ongoing and new research projects in CEI where collaboration with external partners and demonstration of developed solutions in partner case studies will be of high importance.
