Odense M

We are looking for a PhD student to work in the new lab of Associate Professor Francesca Serra at the Department of Physics, Chemistry and Pharmacy at SDU in Odense. The position is for a project in experimental soft matter in the area of active liquid crystals.

Just as liquid crystal molecules align with each other, in the same way many cell types align spontaneously over large distances, and this has consequences in their organization. We are looking for excellent and motivated candidates to investigate the behaviour of living cells in analogy with liquid crystals. The candidates should have a strong background in physics and an interest in biological physics. Previous research experience in wet lab is desirable, but it is not a strict requirement. Prior experience with cell culture is not needed.

The selected PhD candidate will be part of the PhyLife centre at the University of Southern Denmark, an interdisciplinary centre within the university that brings together physicists, chemists, biologists and engineers. The work will also involve extensive collaboration with students and researchers at Johns Hopkins University (USA). We are committed to cultivating an inclusive and collaborative lab environment.

The appointment will be for a term of three years at a very competitive salary and is expected to start in the autumn of 2021 (exact starting date is flexible). Funding for travel to conferences and workshops is also available.

For any further questions please contact: Francesca Serra, Department of Physics, Chemistry and Pharmacy, University of Southern Denmark, Campusvej 55, DK-5230 Odense M, Denmark or by e-mail to: [email protected].

Application deadline: 31 July 2021.

Application, salary etc.
Appointment as a PhD Research Fellow is for three years. Employment stops automatically at the end of the period. The holder of the scholarship is not allowed to have other paid employment during the three-year period.

The successful applicant will be employed in accordance with the agreement on salaried PhD scholars between the Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations). Please check links for more information on salary and taxation.

The successful candidate will be enrolled at this university in accordance with faculty regulations and the Danish Ministerial Order on the PhD Programme at the Universities (PhD order).

The University wishes our staff to reflect the diversity of society and thus welcomes applications from all qualified candidates regardless of personal background.

Application must be made in the form of a Declaration of Interest including the following:
