Effect of a start-up plan on diabetes distress and treatment satisfaction in individuals with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes

A research assistant position is available at the Steno Diabetes Center Odense and at the Research Unit for General Practice, University of Southern Denmark, starting on October 1, 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter.

About the Project

It is our ambition that the project and the applicant will evolve into a PhD project on evaluating the effects of a start-up plan for individuals with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes on measures of diabetes distress and treatment satisfaction.

In the initial period after being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, patients must learn to live with a chronic disease that will potentially affect most aspects of their lives, including professional and leisure activities as well as family and social relations. Newly-diagnosed patients must also learn how to manage their condition and the associated risks. As such, the time immediately following a diagnosis may be particularly challenging for patients and their families, and it is thus essential that these patients receive treatment that addresses these aspects.

Starting in 2021, the Steno Diabetes Center Odense will implement an intervention designed to strengthen and improve treatment for persons newly-diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. The plan will take measures to improve the level of care provided to the patient by ensuring continuity across healthcare teams and increasing the involvement of persons with diabetes and their close relatives in the treatment and care planning process.

The research project will examine the effects of this type of start-up plan on diabetes distress - that is, a person’s experience of the problems associated with diabetes. The project will also focus on treatment satisfaction. The project will utilize data from several sources, including registry data, electronic patient journal data, as well as patient surveys.

The research project would be well suited to a candidate with a background in public health, medicine, nursing, psychology, or related areas.

The project will be supervised by Anders Larrabee Sønderlund (Assistant Professor) and Troels Mygind Jensen (Post Doc).

For further information please contact Professor Jens Søndergaard, Head of the Research Unit of General Practice ([email protected]).

Application deadline: August 8, 2021.

Job interviews will take place during week 34 (between August 23 – August 27).

The application must contain:

• A cover letter
• A CV including lists of relevant personal data and formal qualifications
• Degree certificates (inclusive of a master's degree diploma)

Only applications written in English will be accepted for evaluation at the university.

Applications may be shortlisted.

Incomplete applications with regard to the above-mentioned requirements will not be assessed.

The University wishes our staff to reflect the diversity of society and thus welcomes applications from all qualified candidates regardless of personal background.
