SDU Software Engineering at the Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller Institute, University of Southern Denmark, invites applications for a 4-year PhD position in Software Technology. To apply for the 4+4 PhD position, it is required that the applicant is enrolled in the TEK master’s programmes within software engineering or computer science and has completed the first year at the time for enrollment.

SDU Software Engineering focuses on the many aspects of software engineering from requirements to test as well as data and supporting software technologies across many domains. A domain in focus relates to SDU’s state-of-the-art Industry 4.0 lab, which is the largest of its kind in Denmark and houses the newest robotics technology, storage cells, mobile robots, AR/VR technology, and digital twin technology. You will interact with a dynamic group of researchers working in interdisciplinary teams on developing potent solutions to societal challenges.

The PhD project
The goal of this project is to design and develop software technologies for edge computing that supports the software development of computing-intensive applications within collaborative robotics. The availability of powerful edge computing platforms fulfills a need within collaborative robotics to enable computing-intensive applications that implement artificial intelligence components. To orchestrate this requires software technologies that enable flexible software development, low latency computing and handling of confidential/privacy-sensitive data. The software technologies will be evaluated in three cases spanning stationary and mobile collaborative robots and integrated industry 4.0 production lines. The position is connected to collaborative projects with companies in the collaborative robotics sector.

As a PhD student you are expected to communicate scientific results in English (written and spoken).

Job description
  • You will conduct research in the intersection of software technologies and edge computing.
  • You will develop open-source software prototypes.
  • You will publish and present your work both at international conferences and in scientific journals with high impact.
  • You will assist in teaching activities.
