Odense M

The Research Unit for Oncology at SDU’s Department of Clinical Research would like to invite highly qualified graduates from all over the world to apply for this Ph.D. position within the interdisciplinary field of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and radiotherapy. The Ph.D. student will be based at Odense University Hospital (OUH) starting as soon as possible in the first quarter of 2022. The project is supported by the Danish Cancer Society.

Research environment
The successful candidate’s office will be in the Laboratory of Radiation Physics, Department of Oncology at OUH. She/he will work in a multi-disciplinary environment with medical physicists, MRI scientists, medical doctors and specialized radiotherapy staff.

The department has an active research environment, with Ph.D. students, associate professors and full professors. The project will be carried out in close collaboration with other OUH departments, and external collaborators, Danish Research Centre for Magnetic Resonance (DRCMR) and Technical University of Denmark (DTU).

Project description
Odense University Hospital (OUH) was among the first institutes worldwide to treat cancer patients with the recently released high field hybrid MRI linear accelerator (MR-linac), and is currently the only hospital in Denmark to offer this specific state-of-the-art radiotherapy option. The MR-linac allows superior anatomical image guidance during radiotherapy, and gives for the first time, an opportunity for daily image based biological tailoring of radiotherapy.

The overall aim of this project is to investigate the so-called Time Dependent Diffusion MRI (TDD-MRI) as a non-invasive method for biological individualization of radiotherapy through sophisticated cellular characterization of the tumour. In this project, we will implement, as the first in the world, TDD-MRI on the MR-linac, and investigate its clinical potential in two different cancer diagnoses.

Qualifications
The successful candidate will hold a master’s degree in physics, engineering or related fields. Candidates with a master’s degree or certification in medical physics within radiotherapy will be considered to have a strong background. Prior knowledge of MRI is necessary, as well as programming skills (e.g. Matlab, python).
