PhD Position in Visual Interface Design

The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Southern Denmark, Odense, invites applications for a PhD position focusing on visual interface design in the context of a EU-funded EDIDP project CUIIS. The proposed starting date is 1 March 2022. The hired candidate will be part of the Data Science and Statistics Group. Application deadline: 19 January 2022.

Candidate Profile
We are looking for highly motivated students interested in designing and developing visual interfaces in collaboration with defense experts and marine engineering companies. The ideal candidate has an MSc in Computer Science, and has already gained experience in collaborating with experts from other domains. A minimum requirement is acquired experience in at least one of the following areas:

- Information Visualization
- Human-computer Interaction
- Interface Design

Experience in interdisciplinary projects and writing scientific publications is a plus. Fluency in English is required.

The position is financed by the European research project “Comprehensive Underwater Intervention Information System” (CUIIS), which focuses on the area of underwater technologies for physical support and recovery of divers by building a command, control, communications and information (C4I) mission system for underwater management, underwater monitoring, situational awareness, positioning, navigation and manned-unmanned teaming. It will provide solutions to avoid/mitigate Decompression Sickness (DCS) risk, create and use a real-time underwater common operational picture through the fusion of various types of information, and ensure interoperability, coordination and de-confliction of underwater intervention activities, including manned-unmanned teaming, involving the teaming of a large number of divers and underwater unmanned vehicles (UUV).

Your tasks will include reviewing existing visual interfaces of underwater systems, and designing new as well as enhancing existing visual interfaces to support diver tracking, navigation, coordination and health monitoring tasks.

Application, salary etc.
Appointment as a PhD Research Fellow is for three years. Employment stops automatically at the end of the period. The holder of the scholarship is not allowed to have other paid employment during the three-year period.
